In our small engine shop, we quite often come across carburetors that are so old that replacement parts are no longer available. Either that or the equipment is Chinese and there are no parts/diagrams available. Either way, making your own float bowl o-rings is pretty much the only option. I remembered my dad telling me about buying bulk o-ring material, cutting it to length and gluing it up with super glue to make belts back when he did electronics repairs. I figured... why not. This works better than expected!Instead of cutting straight down at a 90° angle, I recommend cutting both sides to a matching 45° (or any angled) angle like this - / / - so that when you lay the end of one side on top of the other end, they will press together to create a much better seal. If you are using this for float bowl gaskets, or any similar application, you can add a drop of super glue if you like, but I have found that cutting it the way that I do, the glue is not necessary. If you do need to use super glue to bond the ends together, cutting them at an angle gives more surface area for the glue to bond to as opposed to just a straight end cut.

This is O ring material. Handy stuff for making replacement rings for old out of date parts. With care and suitable glue, you can too. The material appears to resist most liquids, and comes in handy sizes. Place unused material in a plastic zip lock bag with some baby powder, which keeps things from oxidizing. I have rubber bands in a coffee can over 50 years old in baby powder and they are just like new.
