I’ve been curious about light/water meters for my houseplants. Over the last year I’ve been using an app to help me take better care of them (paying for the app is cheaper than replacing the plants when they die) but since most of my plant experience has been peppered with me saying, “Awww, I really liked that one,” I don’t really have a feel for how wet the soil is below the surface, especially when it comes to larger pots.I was pretty excited to receive this and now that the weekend has arrived, I’ve been busy testing out the soil in my various plants. It is pretty nifty even though I’m not (yet) sure what to do with the information now that I have it. The meter doesn’t need any power source - no batteries, no charging cable - which is nice. There is a guide on the back of the package that gives some guidance although you still need to know something about your plants’ water requirements to make good use of it (except for a rating of “blue/8-10” which says, Don’t add any water, don’t water your plant.” so I guess that means that you’ve created a swamp that no plant can survive. The first plant I tested this on was a parlor palm that is pretty healthy, but after several years of doing really well, it seems like I overwatered it so I’ve been letting it dry out for a few weeks and I wanted to see if I was making progress. I stuck the probe into the pot (the package says 3cm - 15 cm, which I think is 1-5 inches) and it registered the moisture. Then without removing it, I switched the function to measure the light and gave it a minute or so and the needle had moved. It said the location is dark, which is correct. Last I switched to PH meter, and the needle didn’t move but I don’t know if it needed more time, or. If the correct reading left the needle in the same spot as the correct reading for light. I’m not really sciencey enough to do anything about it if the PH is off though, so for now I’m just going to say that it is what it is.Overall, it seems to work and I’m hoping to learn enough to make really good use of it.

Since my garden is in full sunlight most of the day and we get sufficient amounts of water, I really only bought this to test the pH levels in my garden and in my yard.I will note that the readings for light and water were what you would expect. All the way over for sunlight and the moisture content here in the spring is always high. This meter confirmed those readings. The pH readings jumped around in my garden depending upon where I placed the meter into the soil. I'd be surprised if that wasn't the case. For tomatoes you want a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Anything outside of those readings will show your soil is too alkaline or too acidic for good tomato growth.Tomatoes are an acid-loving plant, meaning that they grow best in soils with a pH below 7.0 (7.0 is neutral on the scale). I got most readings between 6.2 and 6.7. I did get a few readings in the high 5s, but I wasn't surprised by that. I can add some specific nutrients to get the pH into the 6s if I want to do that. Overall, the meter gave results that I somewhat expected based upon a comparison I sent to the local county soil-sampling office. Therefore, I think it works just fine, and I'll continue to use it throughout the growing season adjusting the pH as necessary for good tomato growth.

Down into the soil, the probes went into the dark, where roots, worms, and microbes reign. What substances the combination creates determines how well the yellow Princess Buttercup roses will do. I had soil strips that told me the environment of the soil on top, but now I need to know what lay beneath in the dark depths where the nutrient flow is. It had different readings. The rose bed is near a concrete porch and doing well, but summer heat can lead to surprises. I would rather do some prevention. It has rained for several days, accumulating nearly six inches in three days. Roses, in general, do not like wet roots for too long a time. The soil meter lets me know what compositions are going on at the roots. The Moist position tells me about the water content and that it is wet. Need to check how long it takes to drain. The light position lets me know the LUX level is about 1700 ao ample sunshine that part of the day. PH was the surprise because the top levels are around 6 to 7, so say soil strips. The rose is in a hole enriched with the soil lat 6 to 7 PH, but outside that zone, it says closer to 5, so you may need to do a drench to raise the PH at the roots as growth occurs. Now, on to the garden strawberry baskets, where soil knowledge in such a small container becomes critical. Soil was bought so seeing if what was told is what it is. I mainly wanted to know the soil conditions that allowed me to have a red ripe strawberry on the ninth day of April from an everbearing transplant. So readings were Moist but a bit wet, light 1800, and PH about 7. So now I have some data to try to make a second week in April ripe strawberries happen again, possibly next year. No on or off switch so lasts only as long as the power cell does.

I purchased this meter to monitor the soil in my recently acquired bonsai plant. When I placed in into the soil it immediately began to register the readings. The moisture and PH both seem to be accurate, however the light measurement did not register very high even though the plant is directly under a grow light. In my case this is not a problem, but that is a drawback if the light is not calibrated correctly. I’m satisfied with the meter for the application I’m using it in.
