The screws supplied are junk. The Philips. Head strips out before the screw is set all the way in.

We really like how these helped finish out our deck railing we put up. They look really good & they did add stability to the posts.I started with wide metal C brackets so I could securely anchor the posts to the framing under the composite boards. After hollowing out the bottom of the post to account for the lag bolts I used so they would sit flat, I screwed in the sides deep enough to pull the brackets in. This way these black caps would slide over the brackets.Even though the bases are attached in only a few points to real wood, they really helped add stability to the posts. I did use decking screws for most of the base & only used the supplied ones for show where they would not be screwed into anything (between decking boards). After only a few days they are rusting so it looks like I need to pull these out & replace with the decking ones I used. The shorter supplied screws are looking good so far.As these are just plastic & will fit a processed 4x4 post. (we are using pressure treated & then stained posts) Being just plastic I think they are a bit pricy, but we are happy with the end results. If you are using dimensional posts (like rough cut Cedar) that is actually 4x4", not 3.5x3.5" these will not work until you make the ends that would go in the posts smaller to fit.

Was very surprised how easy these were to install and kept my deck railing very sturdy. NO, you DON'T need to trim your 4x4 post, they are very snug as they should be and held them up level and tight while I screwed them in. Highly recommend.
