The threaded hole for the speed sensor should be perpendicular to the centerline of the crankshaft and centered over the ring gear teeth.

5

A spot face should be present to provide a flat surface on which to anchor the locknut. With the engine stopped, screw the speed senor in until it touches a gear tooth, then back it out 3/4

Mounted to knuckle and pointed at heads of wheel studs, viola!

works as advertised. Bigger than it looks in the pic, but the dimensions listed are correct.

I was not finding the information on the pickup in the description so I was hesitant to buy it. But for the price, I thought I'd give it a try and it has worked great. I am using this for prototyping in a workshop and not actually installing it on an engine or gen set.The product ships with a plastic mesh for thread protection and that seems to have worked. The threads were in good shape on arrival.I couldn't tell from the description what the thread size and pitch were since I believe UNF describes fine pitch and 2A describes the tolerance class. I measured the pitch at 18 threads per inch (TPI) and the thread outside diameter measures 0.615" [15.6 mm] so I think these are 5/8-18 threads on the body of the pick up. The pick up includes a jam nut measuring 3/4" [19.1 mm] nominal flat to flat which is a little smaller than the typical 15/16" [23.8 mm] you would find on an ANSI/ASME B18.2.2 jam nut. The smaller nut will help the fit in a tight space, but has a little less bearing area and might deform under high torque loads. The body of the pick up includes one set of wrench flats measuring 0.550 " [14.0 mm] flat-to-flat, probably for a 9/16" wrench. There are only 2 wrench flats (one at 12 o'clock and the other at 6 o'clock) and for tight installations it would be super helpful to have 4 wrench flats (12 o'clock, 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock, and 9 o'clock). The body of the pick up measures 3.18" [ 80.8 mm] for overall length which matches other data sheet descriptions of the MSP675. The case is non-ferrous (magnets do not stick to it, which is good for a mag pick up). I'm guessing the materials are stainless steel based on surface finish and hardness.I set up the probe to view a notch on my lathe chuck to verify the dynamic response of the probe. With a 0.040" [1.00 mm] gap I found the output varied from 3 to 15 volts peak-to-peak as the event speed changed from 600 events per minute to 10,000 events per minute which about what I would expect for this gap.Seems to be working great, I'm happy with the purchase.
