About VGT Solenoid

The VGT Solenoid, sometimes also called the VGT actuator, is a critical component of the variable geometry system. VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) allows one turbo to effectively take the place of two. At low RPM's the vanes are configured to make the turbo spool up quickly to minimize lag, at higher RPM's the vane angle is changed to perform like a larger turbo. The variable geometry system uses a PCM commanded electric solenoid to control the flow of pressurized engine oil which moves a piston to control the movement of the variable vanes.

How to Install a new VGT solenoid

1. Disconnect both negative battery cables.

Remove air intake resonator (plastic "6.0L/6.6L" box above the turbocharger inlet).

2. VGT solenoid protrudes from the bearing housing (center section) of the turbocharger. Locate and remove VGT solenoid electrical connector.

3. VGT solenoid is held in place by a bracket that is secured with a single retaining bolt and remove the bracket bolts.

4. Replace solenoid includes a new bracket and retaining bolt.

5. Make sure the o-rings on the solenoid valve are well lubricated, then install solenoid in reverse order by pushing it into the bore in the bearing housing until it is seated. The solenoid will have a tendency to push out slightly until the bracket is installed.

6. Install solenoid bracket, lightly coating retaining bolt with high temperature anti-seize to permit future removal.

7. Clean electrical connector using a plastic safe electrical connector/contact cleaner, then reinstall the connector. Do not forget to snap the connector retaining clip into place.
