How to Plant Bare Root Strawberry Plants

Cold hardy strawberry plants and heat tolerant strawberry plants

Step 1: Check Outdoor Temperatures

If your outdoor temperatures are above 85°F or below 32°F, start your strawberries indoors for the first two weeks. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions over the course of a week before planting them outside.

Strawberry plant soil for compact soil and loose soil

Step 2: Proper Soil

Well-draining soil is extremely important! We recommend mixing at least 30% sand into a high-quality base soil.

Starting strawberry plants by planting them indoors is recommended for certain temperatures

Step 3: Starting Indoors (if needed)

In a cup or pot, plant your strawberry so that the soil reaches the base of the crown. The crown begins where the roots meet the upper portion of the plant. Burying the crown can significantly increase the risk of suffocating the plant. Firmly press the soil down around the edges of the cup or pot to encourage water runoff, and water gently. Place the pot in a sunny window and water every 3-4 days, or whenever the top 1/2 inch of soil feels dry.

How to Plant Strawberries Outdoors

Step 4: Planting Outdoors

Plant your strawberries in raised rows or mounds. As explained in Step 3, be careful not to bury the crown. Generally, strawberries should be planted 12–18 inches apart, with rows spaced 3–4 feet apart.

Received these strawberry roots February 28 they were in very good condition. They had very few leaves on them tiny dormant . I put the roots in water and had them on a heating mat in my greenhouse for four days within two days they had leaves opening already. I planted them today in a strawberry pot to keep inside the greenhouse. The leaves are amazing on these now . The roots are great Very healthy I bought 10. They sent me 12. Very much appreciated . Buying more today. Thanks

I received my bareroot strawberry plants several days ahead of scheduled time. They were well packed and the roots were very long. I ordered 15 but I received 19 to my pleasant surprise. I am very pleased with my purchase and I would recommend this company to anyone asking as I will reorder whenever the need arises.

Plants are looking good and had no problem planting but not producing as many strawberries as I thought they would. It's been 6 weeks since I planted them and I'm about a week away from my first strawberries. Not sure about this variety and how many strawberries they produce.

Ordered 10, and received 12—a nice bonus! Potted them up the next day, and by day one, six were already showing new growth. After seven days, nine had sprouted fresh leaves. By day 12, 11 plants had new growth, with some pushing multiple leaves. So far, so good!

These roots rotted and were mixed away in my soil for new plants and the seller wanted them back for my refund. They could have at least offered me some more roots to keep me considering ordering again or recommending them to others. Apparently Amazon cannot help me if it was a third party seller?
