This bit claims to be a replacement for the Keller/whiteside dovetail bit used with the 1500/1601 dovetail jigs. While it does work, the bit I received is so narrow that I had to recalibrate the pin template of my Keller jig to the extreme end - about 3/16 back - from the Keller scribe line to get the pins to fit with these tails. Aesthetically these look fine but I’m surprised about how much smaller they are.

I have a dovetail jig with 1/2 inch fingers. I didn't see that the bearing was 9/16s and would not fit in the jig fingers. The replacement bearing that was 7/16 OD was $25 from Nampa. I ended up removing the bearing and using the bit with the 7/16 template sleeve on my router. I would give the bit five stars as it makes great looking dovetails but wouldn't work on my jig out of the box.

The dovetail angle of this bit does not fit the Keller jig. You have to pare every tail to fit the dovetails this bit cuts. I measured the top of an original bit with this one and the original one was wider at the top creating a different angle to the tail cuts.... bummer, back to Keller to buy a new bit!

I inherited a set of Keller 1601 dovetail jigs without the corresponding bits, the 1633 (dovetail) and 1643 (straight). After doing some research, I stumbled upon the Amana 45882 (dovetail) and 45470 (straight) and have found them perfectly acceptable replacements to the Keller 1633 and 1643, respectively. I have now made a couple of dovetailed boxes with them and they have a very clean cut. However, I have not used them extensively, so only time will tell if they hold up. Considering they are 50% cheaper than the Keller bits and made by a decent brand, I would definitely purchase again. For those of you aren't familiar with Amana bits, they are Israeli made and tend to be good quality. See this review for a head to head comparison of many router bit brands ([...]PS: If you haven't used the Keller 1601 jig or need a refresher, I recommend this youtube video ([...] which features the creator of the jig showing how to use it. Specifically note than that he is always cutting INTO the wood when cutting pins. This technique has definitely cut down on chip out in my workpieces.
