It might work on a 5lb anchor and chain. Anything above that good luck!

I bought a much larger boat a few years ago. The previous owner lived in the Portland/Vancouver area and fished for salmon on the Columbia River. As a result, he had a Columbia River Anchor System (big yellow buoy in the photo) to help with hauling up the large anchor/chain combo. I don’t need that capacity in the depths and locations I currently fish and the big buoy takes up way too much of my bow space. I saw this Better Boat anchor ring lift and, after doing a bit of research, ordered a unit. The Columbia system relies on a rope jam that lets the rope slide through as you’re lifting the anchor (i.e. by driving away) but jams the rope when the anchor/chain has reached the buoy preventing it from going back down. The jam has to be mounted on the anchor rope when you let the anchor down which I also don’t like. By contrast, the anchor ring can be slipped over your anchor rope if/when you decide to use it. I do believe you need to have a length of chain to pass through the ring to keep the anchor at the surface after raising it, but that’s not a problem for me since I do have said chain. The ring and clips are stainless steel which is important since I fish and crab in the bays and ocean. The rope is decent quality but it will break down if left in the sun so stow it when not in use. Curiously this ring did not come with a buoy or choice of buoys. I just so happened to own a smaller (red) buoy that should work fine for my situation, but you might end up spending significantly more money for a buoy, right? The $16 price point is about right for what you get, but I think consumers would be willing to pay extra for a choice of buoy sizes (small, medium, large). This is a good product but not eyeball-scorching-great. Four solid stars.

I got this anchor rope and rope anchor retrieval system for use on my 16 foot runabout or my 20 foot pontoon boat in conjunction with the 12 inch anchor buoy ball (Amazon) that I already had. So the anchor buoy ball anchor retrieval system is attached to the chain or rope of the anchor when you're ready to pull the anchor out to enable the easy retrieval of the anchor. Everything is built solidly, the two carabiners are strong, the 28.5 inch/72 cm long yellow rope provided which is already nicely spliced into a loop at both ends is made of braided poly propylene approximately 7/16 inch diameter. Because of the way the splice is made the two sides of the splice are only about 9/32 an inch diameter. I would add a 9/32 inch thimble to fit inside the loop splice so that the carabiner would be contacting only the metal of the thimble. Nowhere in the Amazon description or on the box does it say what the rope is made of but since it floats even after I squeeze out all the air from inside braiding it is polypropylene. Two problems associated with polypropylene number one is attacked by sunlight and is stored in sunlight will degrade over several months becoming useless. It is also less strong and resistant to shock loading than either nylon or polyester line. AsSome of the measurements are wildly erroneous: Amazon description and the box say it is a 12.5 inch ring. Measurement shows on the Amazon description as 12 1/2 inches diameter. In fact it is only 5 5/8 inch diameter. The rope in the Amazon description is 18 inches long but in reality it is 28 1/2 inches. However the two carabiners are in fact the advertised 3 inches long. Now the Amazon description and the box say it is made of marine grade stainless steel which most people would expect to be type 316. If it is 316 they should say so. I don't have a metallurgical laboratory to test what kind of stainless steel it is.Strength tables on the Internet show polypropylene rope diameter 9/16 inches (14 mm) has room breaking strength of 4590 pounds force and using a safety factor of 12, a safe load is only 465 pounds.I have double braided half inch nylon rope which has breaking strength 8500 pounds and working load limit 1700 pounds that I use in conjunction with white plastic coated galvanized anchor chain that connects to the anchor itself. The back of the product box has a five sentence explanation of how to use the system with no illustrations or diagrams. Totally insufficient. Fortunately searching on YouTube shows you several good demonstrations. Conclusion: recommend

A pretty straightforward product. I like that the end loops are closed with no gaps. The gauge of the ring is certainly adequate. I'm not a big fan of poly rope but it is a short section and floats well. A very solid product overall.

So pleased with this anchor ring. It is sturdy and well made. We are looking forward to using it next season to pull our pots. We have a pot puller on our runabout but not on the sailboat. We have been trying to figure out how we could install a pot puller without interfering with the riggings & rudder then I saw a YouTube video of a boater pulling an anchor with an anchor ring - it not only pulls anchors, it can pull pots! This is a super option not having to buy a pot puller or modifying our windlass, plus it keeps the line clear of the rudder, a huge risk with a fixed puller/windlass attached to your sailboat.

This anchor retrieval kit has quality made parts. Genuine stainless steel from what I can tell. Good springs on the carabiners. The rope is your typical polypropylene material so it floats. The size is good for smaller anchors for sure, but if you get a thicker tougher rope you can probably use the ring on larger anchors just as well.Small and compact footprint it’s a good kit to have around. Overall very happy with the quality of this anchor retrieval kit!
