So far so good, it is smaller than the original starter but so far its working fine on my standard 74 beetle, one thing to notice is that it has a different sound than regular vw beetle starters, sounds more like a modern car.

This starter is half the size of the original. It's weak and almost doesn't spin the engine over fast enough to start

It worked very well, but it needs PROFESSIONAL installation by a mechanic with electrical-automotive knowledge because the solenoid does not have the pin that goes to the distributor. Perfect fit on 1970 beetle manual transmission

You see how this starter has a long shaft sticking out of the spinny gear part? My Beetle's starter does not have that, also the whole thing is like twice the size (old is bigger than new). I figured maybe it was just a modern upgrade. nope. There's not enough clearance for the shaft to fit. The starter seemed to be good quality, it had a test data sheet included to let you know it's been thoroughly QA'd, but it's literally just not the right shape for my car, which it claimed it could fit. I'll give it 4* because, again, it was good quality and thankfully this is Amazon, where returns are a no-brainer, but you guys NEED to double-check compatibility. The original starter has no shaft coming out of the gear, and the part the gear rests on is a dome, not a cylinder.

Installed on a 1973 VW Thing. Works great. Would purchase again if needed for one of the other VWs
