I was worried that I was sent the wrong product because the tin I received is packaged differently. The website on the packaging leads to CAIG labs, and all of the products on their website have DEOXIT on their labels, which this one does not.

I love this stuff, I had soldering tip that was messed up. I dipped it in this tin and WOW! SHINY again! It stinks like ammonia though so be careful not to snort the fumes.

If you are doing real solder work you need a nice clean and tinned tip. This does the job. A couple seconds in the tin and a brush with the brass wool and you are ready to solder the most fine wires quickly.

Once you pry the lid off, there is plenty of product and it seems to do what it advertises. But the lid is so tight you have to use a tool to get it off, and it seems like the stuff is going to fly all over the place if you lose your grip. For a busier soldering station, I guess you could leave the lid off, but for home, if you have small kids you have to keep it away from them, so you need to put the lid back on---then hope you can get it off again.

I have this product and it works well. I think the chemical is largely powdered solder in a cake form (so it doesn't spill out of the container) and maybe some ammonia from the smell. It has a similar effect as tinning your tip with regular wire solder, but immersing the tip is more effective. Once you immerse the hot soldering tip into the chemical, the chemical starts to boil around the tip. I leave it there for a few seconds and move the tip around a little. When you remove the tip it's bright, shiny and well tinned.I took a star off because the lid can be difficult to remove. Not sure if the lid can remain off when not in use. There are several other tip tinners available, search for "tip tinner" and "tip cleaner". I'm not sure if any one is better than another. The brass wool cleaners like are also very effective at cleaning soldering tip and should be used with a chemical cleaner like this.
