About this item

  • A revolutionary chest ascender that features two proprietary rollers for a smooth interface with the rope. This not only helps with climbing efficiency by making the upward glide much smoother. It also reduces dangerous wear on the device where the rope tends to rub on the body of a traditional ascender.
  • The perfectly profiled closure keeps the rope in line with the body of the device and the rollers to prevent the rope from escaping the device during tight pendulums and traverses.
  • Self cleaning holes on both the body and the cam. Thicker body plates and a shaped connection point reduce wear on the device caused by shifting between the device and the connector (especially when used with steel connectors). This also keeps the device more in-line with the body during use.
  • The opening mechanism is simple and secure with the ability to lock the device open for easier attachment and a removable pull cord that makes it easier to operate while wearing gloves.
  • The proprietary rollers also allow the Turbochest to be rigged as a locking pulley for light hauling with a max load of 50 kg, 110 lbs.

The small size and quick hookup of this ascending device incorporated very well with our rescue harnesses for work on aerial tramway rescue.

This device is small and light. It ascends maybe slightly better than my CMI Small Ultrascender as a ventral ascender. Being small, it is somewhat fiddly and not very good for downclimbing.

I bought a Camp Turbo Chest a few years ago and used it lightly for 2 years, (maybe used on rope ~10 times), before the teeth had worn so smooth it no longer gripped or bit into the rope at all. I was in a for nasty surprise and a very unpleasant set of ascents the day it failed. Be careful with this product, normal cave decontamination was used after each use and the durability of this product did not stand up to it. Loved the smoothness of the rollers and the easy release prior to that incident.

I use it for fixed top rope soloing (not recommended use by manufacturer) - with a Machard backup. It rolls smoothly up when the rope is tight and vertical, with less friction than any other device I know. Inconvenient: opening is not easy (good for safety while climbing but it's annoying to free the rope after climbing). The pull string is fragile and broke on the 3rd day using it (the device is still usable, but even harder to open now).
