If you are going to can your own food, then these are your "must have" tools of the trade. I gave it a 4 star because the kit did not come with a magnet to pick up the lids.

I just finished canning 4 (wide mouth) jars of homemade and homegrown fig jam and when the time came to lift the jars out of the water bath, I was able to get them out one-handed without any issue at all. The lifter grabs on tight and the jars lift straight out without any tipping or jostling. The kit also comes with a lid-magnet/bubble-popper thingie. I didn't use this because I didn't need to pre-sterilize my lids, but it's nice to have. There were also some labels, which are really nice. I typically use a china marker, but labels are clearer (I just hope they don't fall off over time). There was also some sort of cloth thing in there. I used it to wipe the excess water off the lids and to hold the hot jars as I screwed them down tight (so I wouldn't burn my hand). I think it's a great little kit to have if you're planning on doing any canning.

It may seem like a little thing, but the tool that releases air from the canning jars and has a magnet on the other end to remove lids--one at a time--from the hot soaking water is big deal when you are canning.During our last canning session with homemade organic salsa from our garden, I did, but I could with a chopstick to remove air bubbles, but it wasn't a perfect process. Having the right tool for the task makes it easier. The jar gripper appears well made and they also provided some labels and a little gift cloth (for wiping jar tops) with the set of tools.

We do quite a bit of canning in the summer, and having the right tools is important. The jar lifter is of a very good quality, grips those slippery, wet jars with ease! And I've never had a magnetic stick for pulling the lids out of the hot water before, but this is amazingly helpful. Magnet is strong enough to grab right ahold of the lid parts.

These canning tongues came fast and put to work immediately, they made the canning process much safer and quicker-no burned fingers. Although the tongues seem a little on the short size, they work for regular and wide mouth jars and were long enough for me to lift pint jars out of an 8 quart pot. It came with a bonus bubble knife which also has the magnet at the end to lift lids and rings from boiling water. That was so appreciated. They send you some labels and a soft fiber cloth, very handy too. This was a good deal for something used once a year in our household.

This set makes canning so much easier. When I first started canning, I didn't want to get a lot of extra tools until I knew it was something that I would actually do more than once. I made do with items I already had, which worked, but it wasn't great. This set is a game changer. Having the specialized tools makes the process much easier. The jar lifter and magnetic lid lifter are super easy to use and I don't have to worry as much about burning myself or dropping sterilized pieces. The labels are nice, and easier to read than just writing on the lid, and the cloth comes in handy as well. Overall, this is a great kit for home canning at a good price. If you're like me and were on the fence about buying additional tools, give it a try. This kit makes canning easier and more fun.

the handle on the jar lifter is not metal all the way through but just a plastic tube with two metal tabs on either end. this means if you squeeze too hard the handle is going to come loose and pop out. not the best when you are handling hot jars. three stars because its better then using tongs i guess
