With a relatively light cocking force and a two-stage adjustable trigger the Optimus is built to get the job done with velocities of up to 950 fps with alloy pellets. The barrel incorporates a micro-adjustable rear sight and fiber optic front sight. It's topped with a Center Point 4x32mm precision scope.

So far an incredible gun, I've only ever owned 2 air guns making this one my third and it's got some power. Very nice group with gamo .22 red fire. Very high quality, real wood stock and decent scope. Definitely worth the money.

I think this Crosman Optimus air rifle is a real honey for the money. For just over a hundred dollars it is very nicely made and the fit and finish on mine were perfect right out of the box. For an air rifle it has quite a bit of power behind it. It sent a round of Crosman .22 Ultra Mag clear through a piece of 3/4" pine board at a distance of about 10-feet. When fired it has a satisfying kickback and bang, at least for an air gun, so much so that I need wear hearing protection when firing it in the indoor range I have set up in my basement or my ears will be ringing, because it's at least as loud, if not louder, than my Porter Cable FR350 framing nailer is. The stock is decently made from solid wood and has a nice low-sheen satin finish. A couple of coats of Trewax clear paste wax has made it look even better. The break barrel mechanism works smoothly and really isn't that difficult to operate. The trigger takes a little getting used to though in order squeeze it smoothly without jerking the rifle because it's stiff and has a lot of travel. Thankfully though, the trigger pull is adjustable. I backed the adjustment screw out [counterclockwise] about 1-1/2 turns and along with a couple of drops of RWS Spring Oil on the triggers pivot points, it made the trigger pull much lighter and more predictable than the factory setting. The trigger safety lever is a nice design. It holds positively when set and is easy to operate with your trigger finger. The CenterPoint scope is decently made as well and was easy to install. I didn't have any issues with it other than it took a bit of fiddling to get it zeroed in. Being that this is a spring piston air rifle, just be sure to always use the "Artillery Hold" when shooting it or you really won't be able to hit anything accurately, even at close range. Overall, considering what I paid for it, I'm pretty impressed with this air rifle and would have no problem recommending it.BTW: I was having a problem with the scope slipping back in its mounts over time from the recoil of firing the rifle. I was able to resolve the issue by removing the factory padding inside the upper half of the clamps and cleaning off the adhesive with acetone. I then lined the inner surface of the clamps with some old style cloth electrical friction tape and also put a dab of Vibratite thread locker on each of the clamp screws. That was several months ago and I have fired it many times since then and the scope has held securely with no slipping.

Pro's- Hard hitting pellet gun that looks the part- High quality, solid feel, not a toy- Low cost and lots of value for your moneyCon's- Tight spring that requires some muscle to operate- Very loud for my suburban environment- Scope required a fair amount of tuning to get accurate (but all scopes do anyway, part of the fun!)In case you haven't noticed, this rifle is not a toy. I handle this with the same care as I handle any other firearm. I've owned this for approximately 6 months and have put about 100 rounds through. The following are they key highlights:1. High qualityThis gun really looks and feels the part. I have a .22 bolt action plinking rifle that I take "into the country" for fun. This rifle looks and feels very similar. The rifle has a very good amount of heft to it, the sights and scope have detailing that indicate that this is not a toy. I'm not an outdoorsman or a carpenter, but the wood stock looks and feels great.2. PowerfulThis pellet gun is very powerful. It will shoot through most things you can find around the house at 100m. It's limit seems to be the few old steel pans I had set up, thought it did create a very sizeable dent at 20m. Although I am only using this for target shooting, I am confident that it is suitable for anything racoon/opossum sized.3. LoudI live on a small 1/4 acre lot in the suburbs and find this way too loud to shoot in anything less than a 3/4 acre. Your neighbors will probably call the police if you shot this regularly in the suburbs. This rifle is as loud as a nail gun. I would advise checking your local laws and regulations before shooting this in any suburban area. If you are in an urban area, don't even think about it. I live in NY and found that I can only shoot this within 500 yards of any building. Imagine a clear 5 football fields in any direction. Even then, you're at the discression of the police that will show up!4. Tight springThe rifle will become easier to cock as it breaks in, but make sure you've eaten your wheaties! For reference sake, I am 150lbs and I do not work out. During break in, I would get tired after putting 20 rounds through in a sitting. My 5'2 110lb wife cannot cock the rifle at all. My 140lb marathon running friend can get it close, but cannot fully cock the rifle. Honestly, everyone is different, but just be prepared that you have to work to get those 950fps!I bought this rifle when there was a 20dollar off promotion. For under a Benjamin, this rifle has great value for a quality product. I would definitely recommend this as a man-toy. It loses a star only because given the loudness and tight spring, I realize that this isn't for everybody, and wasn't a perfect fit for my needs. You should get the gun that fits your needs, as I would consider trading FPS for something more quiet or a spring that is less stiff. Make sure you want a serious pellet gun before you buy this one!
