I place a jar on top with wax melts. Under gets warm, so if you have this item on a delicate surface I would recommend a trivet or something to protect. Typically, mine is on my tile counter or bathroom sink where there is no risk of damage. So far so good and I use it about 8 hours a day.

Have one next to bed. Like it. Does not get too hot. Just right. Bought another for my office desk. Cannot beat the price.

Handy little cup warmer that works best if u have a covering on your beverage. I have a ceramic mug that I like to use for hot beverages. Since it doesn’t have its own top, I use a disposable lid or whatever lid I have handy & that works fine for holding in the heat. If my cup doesn’t have a lid, the warmer just warms the bottom of the cup & not the entire beverage.

I was getting tired of my hot chocolate or cider getting cold in the morning, and this solved that perfectly! It wasn't at all expensive, has at least a decently-long cord, as well a super-convenient in-line switch (similar to a lamp cord), and a bright red indicator light. It gets VERY hot - hot enough to burn you for sure, but still not quite hot enough that it would burn your coffee. It has some tiny "feet" on the underside to help elevate it, but I'd still not recommend leaving this on (even potentially) combustible material for long periods of time. A cutting board or plastic mat might be beneficial for wood surfaces that are prone to heat damage. Finally, if using a mug that isn't perfectly flat on the bottom, I'd suggest occasional stirring so the heat will distribute more evenly, as well as putting a napkin or paper towel on top of the mug. This will help ensure a more optimal temperature. As far as flat mugs go, it constantly kept my drink steaming hot - even ~15 minutes after initially making it. This was quite surprising to me, considering there are many of these things that don't seem to work very effectively. Finally, upon the first few uses, it may start to emit a "burning plastic"-like smell once it's been on for a while, and may even be strong enough to make the room noticeably smell. But, the smell dissipates after several uses, and will eventually no longer be noticeable. I'm not taking away stars, since virtually any heating appliance will stink upon initial use. Also, while the plastic house doesn't feel super thick and the unit is crazy-light, it has a bunch of screws to secure it, so I wouldn't worry about it falling apart under normal use (unless abused, possibly).
