It does the job when my husband goes fishing. Small and portable. Holds the fish well that have spikes. Sturdy.

This gripper seems sturdy enough, but unless you have giant hands, it will be cumbersome for any decent sized fish. The problem is that to open it wide enough, and then to subsequently tighten it around the fish, you need two hands. So if your using two hands to adjust it, that means that someone else is holding the line with the fish, or it's flopping around on the ground. If you're catching smaller fish - perch, walleye, e.g. - this will be fine. But I'll have to see how much help this will be on a large bass.

The ad says they are metal but they definitely feel more like plastic to me. I think they will work fine for smaller fish, holding it in place like a cage while I get the hook out. But for bigger fish I really am afraid that I will someday apply too much pressure and it will break. All I need it to do is keep the sharp dorsal (and side fins on catfish) away from me while I remove the hook. It does do that, but I think there is a size limit. I was nervous using it on a normal sized walleye -- it did not break but I was afraid to apply too much pressure to it. A wiggling big fish might be too much for it.
