Place the needle on the map, and level it so that the starting line on the right side of the needle points from where you are to where you want to go.
Rotating finger movement, make the movement magnetic north line parallel to the map magnetic north line and the arrow to the north.
Keep the map and the needle level as a whole, and then rotate until the red pointer of the needle coincides with the magnetic north line of the movement.
The map ruler pointing in the direction of the target is the correct direction of progress.

I bought this pack to use with my land nav students.Out of 25, 20 of them calibrated true.Five of them did not calibrate true and can't be used for land nav.

Really was hoping for this price but none of them work. Looked at a dozen and gave up. They are liquid filled, no air. But the needles do not float level or freely rotate. And for some reason they will attract to a finger on the dial and follow. No clue on the physics of that. But all were worthless.
