I have never cut a hole in a bass drum head before. I used the Gibraltar cutter. The port was easy to fit after watching the Gibraltar fitting video - a five minute job. Very pleased with the result.

I won't have a bass drum without one of these. They look classy and protect your expensive bass drum head.My new pearl bass drum came with a pre cut hole which I wasn't thrilled about because it was slightly bigger than 5", these hole protectors only come in 4",5",6", so I was afraid it wouldn't fit properly, but I was careful placing it and it seems to work. Hopefully it stays there in the future.

For 13 bucks you can’t beat it. Heavy duty rubberized plastic. It is a little hard to get the inside ring over the other piece but it’s better to be hard and snug then loose.

They could have used a thinner layer of adhesive cushion to achieve a better fit. You really have to push down on the outer ring to get it to click into place with the inner ring. You could use a flathead screwdriver to push it in place but you run the risk of denting your head. Once you do that successfully, it will stay in place forever. The 5" version is perfect for my beta 52 which leaves about half an inch of clearance along the diameter of the grill of the mic. Looks perfect on my 16" kick. Just don't cut your hole too low, otherwise it'll be hard for your mic stand to place the mic appropriately.

This product is perfect! It provides excellent protection for your bass drum port and it looks nice too. Some people have complained about the difficulty in getting the back side attached to the front side, saying it required one or two helpers to get it done. However if you go to you tube, Gibraltar has a video (look for Brent's hang) which shows exactly how to install the ring. In the video he shows you how to attach the back ring to the front with the gentle use of a flat head screw driver and a mallet (or hammer). With this video I was easily able to attach the back ring to the front. I hope that's helpful to anyone who purchases this.

I easily would have given these a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the fact that it took three people (two at a time) and three days to get these to 'click' together. (Not to mention our sore thumbs and fingers.) All this on my two Gretsch white drum heads that fingerprint easily. Now that they're finally in place, the look, sound and work perfectly. But getting there...
