THUJA OCCIDENTALIS `FIRE CHIEF` PP19,009

Nearly perfectly globe shaped evergreen has finely textured, bright golden spring foliage. Very slow growing variety with fantastic autumn colors of deep red. This selection is a worthy choice for a rock garden, as a specimen or as an accent plant. Requires little maintenance.

Grow Tips

Plant in well-drained, organically enriched soil. Feed in spring with organic fertilizer according to package directions. No pruning is necessary to maintain the compact, rounded form.

Bought two of these and very pleased. Roughly the size of a full size basketball or larger, with good color, and packed well. Would definitely recommend. Also, will add that it was a good value. I couldn't find any online dealers selling 1 gallon versions at this price, and my local nursery only had slightly larger versions at $40. So if buying multiple like I did, the savings add up.UPDATE. So, I am guilty of underwatering and one died, with the 2nd still alive but a bit crispy. I ordered a 3rd, and was pleasantly surprised at how big it was when it arrived. A little pruning after winter will even them up a bit. Lesson learned, will water deeply every couple days when we have no rain and it's hot (here in zone 8) until established.

Never write reviews. This shrub came well packaged and very much alive. Beautiful plant and as pictured. Full, round dense globe shape with a tinge of orangey red on tips. Already planted and it's doing great. Very pleased!

We have planted these at the front steps and they are spectacular! I love the way they move in the wind. They arrived healthy and in great shape. A word of advice-I have had whipcord bushes before and they don't like wet feet so don't plant them near a downspout.

I ordered 4 Mr. Bowling Balls in May ‘23, and they are thriving. They arrived in excellent shape and I was pleased with their size; surprisingly, the sizes of the 4 shrubs were very comparable. I didn’t get shrubs that were noticeably different sizes, which was important because they were plantings along the front foundation. I probably didn’t water them as much as I should have last year, but they made it through the winter without any dead spots. I am so pleased with them that I’ve ordered 2 more to plant elsewhere, where I have previously planted different shrubs (and watered them a lot!) and they died. Let’s hope the Bowling Balls will thrive in the new area too. People laugh at me when they learn that the shrubs came through Amazon, but I’ve had the last laugh because they are doing so well.

I purschased 2 Thuja occidentalis 'Fire Chief' (Globe Arborvitae) Evergreens. I initially thought the plants were very nicely packaged and they looked healthy. I personally have a great garden and nothing ever dies. It has a sprinkler system so it get sufficient watering. However after 2 months I noticed a lot of brown at the bottom of the plants and it kept getting worse. Now the majority of both plants are brown. I’ve contacted the company by email many times and have yet to hear back from them. It’s like I’ve been ghosted. I’ve gotten no response whatsoever. At this point I would never buy another thing from their nursery. I was hoping that they would at least send me two new plants or credit me for my purchase. If I had purchased something from Home Depot and it died, they would either let me pick out more plants or reimburse me.Very dissatisfied customer!

I’ve had it for a month and so far ok. It came a little dry but I’m hoping it will get back to being fully green

Last year toward the end of the summer Covid session we went to a large orange store and bought a bunch of clearance arborvitae trees, which we're awesomely named Smargd. Like some sort of medieval dragon or something.Anyway, we bought 4Four because we cleared out our back garden beds along the fence and wanted to block the view of a school behind our house. This summer I finished clearing the last bushes out of the east section, put down thick weed barrier, mulch, and redefined the bed/grass line and it turned out we needed one more tree to make the back look perfect. We physically checked every store around here, but I'll tell you that even if it's an emerald arborvitae, that doesn't mean it's a Smargd arborvitae. No one had anything! So my wife suggested Amazon and one pooped up. I really didn't want to pay $40, but it was 8 am and I didn't want to have to deal with it anymore, so I bought it and started breakfast.I thought about it all through breakfast and decided I wanted to cancel and check one last store to see what they had. Got back to it JUST outside the cancellation window and it entered pre-shipment so I wasn't able to.So THEN I'm angry that I can't cancel it, and went to check the store. They DID have them, but they were more expensive and really small. Ours were already over a year old so we wanted something to match. So in the end, we let the Amazon tree deliver, fearful of what it would look like. But it came quickly and was in great condition! Nice and green! The package was a little crushed on top, but otherwise pretty well packed and shipped. I popped it out and watered it to make sure it got some drink, and the next more I dug my hole and got it planted in line with the others! It's a little taller than we wanted, but it's here, it's in, and I don't have to worry about that section of my yard till next year.Overall a pleasant experience.
