We've tried just about every minimally to moderately expensive solution for protecting our raised gardens beds from animals. Unfortunately, most of what we've tried has either failed, or has required such an insane degree of rigging and re-rigging, we ultimately lost the will to upkeep what we were growing (envision a bunch of green plastic fencing wrapped several times around the garden beds, fastened with metal zip ties, with multiple layers of the same green plastic fencing draped and fastened over top - and then clipping and opening it over and over in several different areas, to access the growing goods).Well, at $169.99 (at time of ordering), this is more expensive than anything we've used in the past, but with this thickness, durability, and a 4' height, and 100' length roll, it's more than enough to secure our three garden beds (and then some). While we still need to build some sort of 'door' with it, so we can more easily access what we're growing, on a regular basis, this stuff is the real deal, and isn't going to wear or give way to 'intruders' easily. Given its quality, I'm hoping I can find even more uses for it - it's great stuff.

This is ultralight grid fencing, almost like plastic fencing in weight and flexibility but certainly more durable and much better looking. When it is properly laid into a frame it doesn't have the tell tale waves that immediately show up from using plastic grid mesh.I began cutting off a test piece by using aviation snips and cutting through 3 wires at a time. Then I switched to a hobby sized rotary tool with a small metal abrasive cutoff wheel and that did a cleaner cut one by one without the open strands curling up and snagging my fingers. The test piece of 2 feet length was thus 8 square feet of material. That weighed 320g; so 40g per square foot (almost 1.5 oz per square foot). Notice my Canadian mixing of measurements like it's normal. You will find the same in my photographs. The specified wire gauge didn't really register with me until I opened up the package. It is thinner diameter than any plastic small grid mesh I have used but again is stronger and looks much better. Staples can sink deeper into the wooden frame and don't compromise the wire. The black coating on the wire took several hard scrapes with a utility knife to begin breaking it down. The scrapes were just removing what the blade was actually contacting so it is not like a plastic dip that separates and peels off. Nice!To describe the packaging, the entire roll is enveloped in clear plastic wrap. Under that is one wrap of exposed mesh secured with a strand of bare wire tying the roll together at three points. The bulk of the roll continues under brown paper wrap. I opened the carton by laying it flat, cutting open one end and pulling back the flaps; then standing the box on that end and lifting it up and away from the standing roll. It will be stable in that orientation while you cut away or untwist the strand of binding wire.

1/2” galvanized hardware cloth is one of the items that is useful for many areas around the homestead. This is the most versatile hardware cloth as it can be used for many functions. I use this for lying under raised planter beds before filling with soil to prevent gopher/mole intrusion. I have used it for building chicken coops, and for low perimeter fencing with ground rods.I’m looking to build another chicken coop and chicken run, this 100’ roll will be perfect for this purpose. In many cases where people might use “chicken wire”, I would suggest using this kind of ½” galvanized hardware cloth instead. It does not rust and has a smaller mesh opening to prevent smaller pests from passing through the fence perimeter.

We are using this UULID ½” welded wire fence hardware to protect our chickens from predators (raccoon, fox and coyote). I have to admit the wire was packaged really well. While the shipping box looked like it had a rough trip, the wire roll came out of the package in great shape. We couldn’t find any damage or broken welds when we rolled it out for installation. That speaks to the general durability, quality of materials and construction. The 19-Gauge wire was light enough for two of us to build portable fence panels. It is tough enough to keep visiting predators from turning our chicken coop into a fast-food drive thru. This wire has a consistent galvanized finish which will be resilient to the harsh weather conditions we experience. It was easy to cut with metal shears, wire cutters or a cutting wheel on a grinder. After a couple of heavy winter storms there were zero signs of damage or stretching from the weight of snow drifts. In fact, the snow buildup on the ½” mesh created a wind break for the birds. The fence is tough! Functionality was proven via a couple raccoons and fox who attempted to get to our birds and failed!Bottom line: This welded wire fencing material is a very good value compared to what we can get locally. For the protection of our birds, this is hands down the way to go. We will be ordering more for our garden project.

I need to brush up on my knowledge and understanding of different gauges and what they mean when it comes to the thickness of wire and fencing. My one real concern while I was waiting for this product to arrive was, How thick and tough is it going to be? I did have a second concern that originated with the first roll of Hardware Cloth that I bought, several years ago, at a local farm supply store. That product turned out to be really difficult to handle, because not only was it made up of strong, minimally flexible metal, but all the edges were like razor blades. Both of these concerns were put to rest as soon as I opened the packaging on this roll. It turns out that 19 Gauge wire looks and handles about the same as standard chicken wire fencing. This is not nearly as strong as the cattle fencing that we used to use, but it is much easier to bend and cut, and much more versatile. Another advantage that this wire has over regular chicken wire fencing is that the gridwork does not have the same tendency to catch on itself when unrolling. Bonus: no razor edges. In my opinion, even though this Hardware Cloth is roughly the same thickness and strength as the less expensive, standard chicken wire fencing, it is a better product, at least for my purposes. I plan to use it as a barrier around my vegetable garden. Last summer, the rabbits and squirrels were so bold that I was able to drive my wheelchair to within a couple of feet before they reluctantly stopped eating my green beans, and took off. I also plan to build what I call "Climbing Frames" for my peas, using salvaged skid wood as the framework, and this Hardware Cloth as the mesh that the peas can climb. Those two projects will most likely use up the roll, but if there is any left, I will probably wrap it around the baby apple trees, to prevent rodents from chewing the bark, and maybe even discourage the local dogs from using the trees in place of fire hydrants. That one I'm not really sure about.I noticed on the product listing page that the information devotes one of the photos and a whole paragraph to describing the robust packaging of this product. As far as I can tell, the outer carton is no thicker or stronger than any standard cardboard box. The roll of wire is also protected by being wrapped in plastic. In any case, the carton that I received had some damage to both ends. The sides looked somewhat battered, but were definitely intact, and the roll of wire suffered no shipping damage. The unopened box weighs almost fifty pounds, so I guess it's to be expected that it might get banged around in transit.I will have to wait for spring before I can begin using this product, but I am pleased that it turned out to be exactly what I wanted.

Pros:- This roll is huge, even bigger than I was expecting, and provides tons of coverage for surrounding your box gardens or other areas to keep animals out.- The relatively fine mesh is perfect for keeping all types of animals out, even mice couldn't get through it. You only have to worry about insects basically.- The mesh feels strong and high quality, and so far has been very weather resistant. It has rained a lot and there's zero rust on it.- Still thin enough to be easy to cut and bend as needed.Cons:- None.Current title: Hardware Cloth 1/4 Inch 48 x 100 ft 23 Gauge Hot Dipped Galvanized After Welding Fence Wire Mesh Roll Hardware Mesh Chicken Rabbit Snake Cage Welding Fencing UULIDMy rating system: 5 stars = performs as expected, 4 stars = small flaws, 3 stars = major flaws, 2 stars = barely usable, 1 star = trash
