We had vented gas logs. The heat went up the chimney. We wanted a secondary source of heat here in the mountains of western NC so we opted for vent free logs. We also had a solid cherry mantle and our flat screen TV just above the mantle. While never a problem with the vented logs, the mantle became too hot to comfortably hold your hand on it in short time with the vent free. I believe in time the mantle would have been destroyed and possibly the TV. I very easily installed the shied. It works perfectly as designed. The shield itself does get too hot to touch but the mantle is barely warm. The TV stays room temp. Bonus: It's black and the metal fire box is also; it looks good!

My mantel was installed about 10 inches from the opening and was getting really hot. We just had this home built and it’s the 1st time we are using the gas fireplace with a motor blower. The heat reflector looks like if it was meant to be there. I did have to cut about an inch off the back because it was too deep. Tin snips worked just fine. Great product !!

Shield was easy to install & certainly insulates the mantel from heat. I have used these for both a fireplace insert & free-standing stove.

We have a large Quadrafire insert and had purchased a wood mantel the we felt was way too hot when we had a stoked fire. We installed the Mantel shield and it decreased the heat considerably, to the point you could place your hand comfortably on the Mantel fora considerable period of time. We took it to a welding shop to have it sized to our mantel and new holes punched in it for the screws and spacers. It cost us $20 but has a smooth professional finish. Would purchase again and recommend to a friend.

Builder put wood mantel too close to top of vent-free fireplace. Mantel was getting exceptionally hot. Shield installed easily and looks fine. after three years, still protecting. absorbs heat and/or deflects.Caution--shield gets pretty darn hot when doing its thing.

I installed a small wood-burning stove onto the hearth in front of my original pre-fab fireplace. The clearance to the mantel did not meet the specifications of the stove. I installed this mantel shield above the stove with L brackets screwed to the pre-fab fireplace. I also utilized a sheet of aluminum foil over the top of the mantel shield to provide a radiant heat barrier. The mantel shield with the foil on top keeps the mantel cool to the touch even when the stove is running at 500+ degrees. I did have to cut the length of the mantel shield to fit my fireplace. This was not a problem with a cutting blade on a hand-held grinder. It was somewhat harder to rebend the cut end to match the non cut end. However, it all worked out well.

I'm so glad I came across this product. We have now had it a year and it is saving our mantle every time we light a fire. The reason it has received a 4 and not a 5 are the placement of the screw holes are double the size of our mantle and that it is not a pretty sight. It does it's job perfectly.

Mantle Shield works great but needs a set of holes in the center otherwise it sags in the rear. It doesn't need to be any thicker it just needs additional support. Our handyman added an extra hole and screw at rear in center and pulled it up level with the rest of the back edge.
