The one I received would not separate anything and had to be returned. Hope yours is better.

I own a couple of air tools paired with a small, oil-free air compressor. Since I don't use them regularly, I hadn't given much thought to this component. However, after installing this separator, I was surprised to find water actually captured within it. I presume this moisture would otherwise remain in the tools and eventually lead to their degradation, such as rusting. I am happy to see that it works!

This separator definitely doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it doesn't need to - it's a common, proven design, and this one definitely seems better built than comparably priced ones I've gotten elsewhere. When properly assembled it does not leak at all, and the 90 psi rating covers any use case I can think of where clean air would be needed (but be sure you have a static pressure regulator upstream of it if you have a higher pressure air supply!). I do wish the pressure rating was stamped/printed prominently on the body, but hopefully my Sharpie mark will hold up.I use it inline before my spray gun for blowing out fine dust filters, where it's very important to me that no oil contamination (like is often left in my air line from nail guns) makes it onto the filters. This is very cheap insurance, and anything it pulls out of the air supply is easily disposed of with the release valve. Similarly, this will protect spray finishes from oil or water contamination if put before a spray gun.

These oil-water separators for use with a compressor are invaluable for maintaining and preserving your air tools, as well as for ensuring your work, if you paint or coat things, is not damaged by either water or oil entering the paint stream. How that works is that when air is compressed it can hold less moisture - that moisture collects inside your compressor tank and enters the air stream when you use the tool at the end of your air hose. If it's a tool, it will circulate moisture through the tool potentially causing internal rust or poor operation. If you're painting, that water enters the paint as the air stream atomizes the paint - this can create less than perfect results. This device traps the water as it leave the compressor tank and prevents it from going into your air hose and beyond.Regarding oil, if you have an oil-lubricated compressor, oil enters the air stream, along with the water, and contaminates your air hose, and if you're painting/coating, that atomized oil also ends up in your paint job. It probably won't look good. It's likely not the fault of the paint or equipment, but the failure to have a clean air supply.I use these devices all the time and you would be surprised at how much water they remove. The clear body allows you to see the build-up and that little valve on the bottom is how you drain the water. While under pressure, press the little pin-like stem and water will be blown out of the canister. This particular device is very well-made - it is heavy, feels solid, and does not give the impression it will leak air. I am so impressed I may pick up several more for all of my compressors. Good value.

PLEASE NOTE: There are multiple items / sizes available from this listing. Amazon places all reviews from these multiple items in this one place. The item that I received and am reviewing is the InoKraft Air Compressor Oil-Water Separator.I first tried installing this water separator to the spray gun but decided that I didn’t like the feel of the gun with it mounted in that position. So I opted to install it at the junction of the 3/8 primary air hose to my 3 foot flexible ¼ inch leader hose. It works quite well in this position and has the added advantage of not limiting my movements with the spray gun. This acts as the secondary water separator in addition to the primary one located at the compressor. Here in Florida where the humidity always seems to be high, I was pleased but not terribly surprised to see that this small water separator was still removing a small amount of water from my air line. The clear body of the filter is a nice feature to be able to see what has accumulated in the filter. How long this thick piece of clear plastic will remain clear is unknown at this point, but the materials used in the construction seem to be of good quality. The filter is completely leak free and the flow through the filter does not seem to have had any impact on my LVLP spray gun.

It seems like it would work perfectly but maybe it is just my compressor. The filter helps but there is still too much water inside.
