The fiberglass “gourd” of this instrument is resonant and durable and satisfying, but the beaded net was so tight that it didn’t rattle and made this fairly useless for it’s intended purpose. I am sending it back.

It looks very nice. It has a good high sound, but I prefer the sound of a natural calabazo. It had a very bad smell, but I really need it to play. So, I wash it and now it smells better.

Lovely shekere! I stretched the net a little when it arrived to get more bead volume, as I am playinv it with 3 other shekere players at the same time and we all play something different. Feels lovely in my hands ( i have small hands) anx gives quite a good work out as it is heavier yhan the natural gourd shekeres we have in the band. I have dropped it several times and it has not been damaged. I saw a great YouTube video of it being played by a pro player, abd Jim himself has contacted me via a shejere Facebook group to see how I like it ;-)

This is my first Shakere, and I'm still getting the hang of it, but it has a good gourd sound and the beads have plenty of volume. Well made and nice looking too. Think I'll have to try an authentic gourd for a better comparison, but I'm satisfied with it. There are some youtube videos of people that can really play, and they make it sound amazing.

Shekere is great. There seems to be a wide range of price, construction, and quality among vendors. I purchased this one after reading several reviews. Shekere is entirely plastic, with PVC balls and netting and (probably) urea-formaldehyde gourd. One of my musicians dropped it, resulting in several raised eyebrows but no damage. The only negative I can think of is the smell of the gourd when it was first unpacked. I originally thought that we got such a great discount from Amazon because of a bad resin formula that would stink forever. However, the smell dissipated within a week of ordinary storage.

I have been playing shekere for years, looking for the prefect one that dances in my hands and this is it! It is beautifully crafted, it is light and fits in the hand, it has deep resonance sounds just like a gourd, yet it cant break. Jim is an amazing Sherkere player and his love for this instrument is apparent in the way it plays and feels. If you get it, it is worth getting his DVD on how to play. You will have a blast and discover this wonderful and fun musical instrument. Thanks Jim not sure how you created the prefect Shekere but you did!
