This thing cuts through my clay like butter! (unless I hit a rock or root). The cores pop out easily and don't clog (after putting WD40) One star off because the handles arent quite lined up with the tines (not parallel) and is slightly crooked once it's all connected, but not enough to bother me too much.

It works. It’s a hunk of metal. The bolt is not super tight that attaches top to bottom, but it’s fine. I suggest you aerate after watering or else it’s hard to get good consistent plugs to come out. Needs some heft, so don’t go out on a Sunday in flip flops sipping Mai Thais, aerating is not easy work but this gets the job done.

Wish it came with a cleaner for the holes so that when you do your last plunge you can get the cylinder of soil out.overall very sturdy, used for 1 reno and seems to be holding up well.

Was a bit sceptical but worked a treat and mud cores pass through the spines no problem, hard work but seems to be helping the lawn after just two weeks, just left the cores on the lawn and almost broken down now

Have an area of the yard that is going to need some work this year, so I thought I would get an early start this spring on it with this aerator. Initial thoughts as I worked this 7 x 7 area...~Easy assembly. Just a couple of screws with TRUE lock nuts.~Beefier than I imagined. The unit is heavy and a good gauge of steel. Should last.~Way easier than I imagined. Was really able to get into a "shoveling groove" and knock this area out in about 10-15 minutes with pretty close spacing. The cores cut through the semi wet ground "like butter".~Coring was average. I was able to get some cores up, but a lot of the wet soil did not seem to core the way I can get a powered aerator. I am not necessarily blaming the aerator necessarily as there are many factors, but I do note it here.Overall a good value for what I needed and I would recommend for small yards.

O.K. so this isn't just a lawn aerator but a plug sampler. I am not sure if that was the idea, but the fork holes are so big that even with their design for the soil not to be collected it still does to a degree with some of it. I think it depends on your dirt. I have clay-like dirt. So, if you want to you can do some plug samples of the dirt in your lawn if it is like mine and sticks. I have always seen aerators for lawns that have small spikes on the bottom of a small board you wear like shoes. Then you walk around your yard with them putting small little holes in your grass. But this tool definitely, isn't putting small holes into your grass. These are a lot bigger than anything I call spikes. I am not sure if you are supposed to have holes in your lawn this big or not but since it is made to do just that I guess it is. The tool itself was simple to put together. It only needed two screws in it with the bolt heads screwed onto them from the other side. They give you both an Allen wrench and a regular wrench to help screw these together. It does mention in the little manual that "when" they, the screws, become loose just tighten them up again. So, I guess I am to expect the screws to come loose once in a while. The fork itself is tough and well-made. And it is comfortable enough to use. Of course, the softer your dirt is the easier it will be. I have been wanting to aerate my lawn for years now and I wasn't sure how I wanted to do it. When I saw this though I definitely, wanted to try it first. So, we will see how well my lawn likes it. Not sure how long it will take to actually see a difference in my lawn if I do at all. I don't know. But I am excited to start using it all around my lawn.UPDATE: It turns out that once I started trying to aerate my lawn with it most of my lawn wasn't wet enough and the holes on the fork were too big for it to penetrate my grass. I live in the Mojave Desert where in the Summer it gets to over 115 at times. So, lawns can get dried out pretty quickly. But even in the spots that were more workable it still could not go down but halfway and then it would get dirt that was a little moister stuck in the holes of the fork. I managed to get the dirt out each time all except one. The dirt is stuck in there good. The holes are just too large for my lawn, unfortunately. I am going to have to use a knife and start stabbing at it. Something I would have rather avoided.

I really like this Hermsche/Better Homes and Gardens Lawn Coring Aerator tool. I got it because of a patch out front where the flowers keep dying because in rainy season, the area becomes a bit of a wash over clay soil, so it becomes so hard packed, nothing grows back.First, this tool comes in a few pieces, and has to be assembled. It was very simple and easy, took less than 5 minutes, with minimal instructions. It's very sturdy. It has 3 coring spikes on the bottom, which you stick into the dirt, then stand on the horizontal bar to put your weight into driving it into the ground. As it goes into the dirt, some plugs get pushed through and out some holes a little higher up.It was very, very easy to do in the soil that wasn't just packed clay. I found it enjoyable, even. I'm ready to do the whole lawn out back once we figure out where is safe (to not damage the buried irrigation), and I'm not exactly a ball of energy. It's been raining, so that helps (they advise to do this right after rain or watering). On hard-packed clay soil, I wasn't expecting it to work at all, but it performed surprisingly well. It didn't go all the way in everywhere, but I found that if I started it at a slight angle and pushed on one side first and then the other, it worked better. I am going to go back out after the next rain and see if adding the holes loosened things up some. Regardless, it LOOKS better, even so.This is a good quality gardening tool that does the job well.
