I decided these inserts needed a demanding test as others I have used stripped out during insertion. There was no information included to let me know what size pilot hole to drill for the insert. I measured the minor thread diameter at around 8.11mm then selected a 0.3125" / 7.94mm drill bit and drilled the pilot hole into a scrap piece of 3/4" oak flooring. I had to c'sink/chamfer the opening to start the insert and then needed a 12" cheater bar to completely thread in the insert. I was thinking the steel might be too soft and the 6mm allen wrench supplied was going to strip out but that did not happen. So with the insert fully installed I wanted to then see how coaxial the 1/4 -20 internal thread was to the outside threads. I threaded in a 1/4 -20 bolt and placed a right angle square along side to visually see it was near perfect. After the testing I concluded these are 5 star inserts. In practice I would probably drill a bit larger pilot hole to make assembly go a bit quicker and easier. Manufacturer's recommendation for hard/soft wood would be welcomed.

I've bought these from the local hardware and big box stores and I have to say these are nicer. The outer diameter is larger so they bite into the wood better. Also they use a hex key to insert them where as the others you have to screw in a bolt with a nut into the insert and then screw it into the wood.I often put a piece of tape on the inserted end and a bit of epoxy into the hole to help secure the insert in the wood. Being larger in diameter also makes that task a bit easier. They still get hidden by the screw's head. They are a bit long but as long as you are careful they will work with a 3/4" board but that's about the minimum thickness unless you can live with the hole going all the way through the wood. The end of the insert has a bit of a flare that nicely countersinks itself when the insert is screwed in all the way. Overall I think these are my new go to when I need an insert.

I use these on my 3d printed products and they work and look very good. They seem much stronger than the smaller brass inserts made for 3d. I torch them until they start to change color and then screw them in to a hole drilled about 80% of their diameter and then quickly thread in a long 1/4x20 screw to make sure it’s straight/adjust
