I usually use the Royal Oak version, but I bought these to test and this is now my second purchase. It works every single time. I have a Masterbuilt gravity 1080 and sometimes the Royal Oak squares don’t stay lit long enough to keep the fire going sometimes and I have to relight and it gets really frustrating. two little squares of these and it’s a done deal.

I tried using more than once and they don’t produce a flame they just burn and don’t light the coals. Absolutely useless .

I’ve tried a lot of different starters. I have used alcohol soaked cotton balls (burn too fast), good quality propane torches (which can get sparky depending on the lump/moisture). I will say I like the big green egg brand better because the composition smells nicer - I think they have cedar or something to give a nice aroma. Other than fragrance, these are at the same performance level. They don’t smell bad, actually they have little odor and don’t smoke heavily.I’ve tried cheaper, less dense knock off starters and end up lighting twice or end up using 3 instead of 1. So the perceived savings of the cheaper options is diminished if not erased by the faster burning and smokier cheap options. These simply just work in any weather and this is now my 4th time buying them in the last 3 years.

This product works great to get lump charcoal started in the bottom of my Green Egg style grill, without using a chimney. Quick to light and no chemical / petroleum smells which could damage the grill. The product breaks apart into the squares as shown on the product image very easily. I only wish they were smaller squares as I generally cut each square in two with my pocket knife so I can spread the flame around a bit more.

There are a lot of charcoal starters out there. I find the twisted strand burn too fast, the wax types work well enough, but they flake a lot and make a mess. These are really good. No mess, they burn well and consistently perform. I can count on a solid fire every time with these. I have bought more than one pack, and the product is consistently reliable. My only negative, which isn’t truly a fault of the starters, is that they do take longer to light and can be harder to get out in windy conditions. Yet, once lit they perform to my expectations. I feel comfortable recommending these to those who like charcoal cooking. And I cook a couple times a week or more, year round.

Super easy to use, broke a square up into 3 pieces and lit instantly, combine this with a rapid fire chimney starter and you’re golden. I got some stubborn charcoal that would take me 30-45 minutes to light. I was fed up with trying to light the charcoal up every time I wanted to grill some steak or burgers. I bought this product and a rapid fire chimney starter got them the next day and I had fully lit charcoal in less than 10 minutes! Best purchase I could have gotten.

Normally, I have a hard time starting wood or charcoal fires, or keeping them going. Lighter fluid words, but it smells and I don't like seasoning my food with the chemicals. So, I decided to give these a shot. I used them along with the Weber 7447 chimney starter. They work great. They don't flare to life, like lighter fluid does and, therefore, I find them much safer. Within maybe 15 - 20 seconds, a square is going good. At separate times, I filled my chimney with mesquite chunks, hickory chunks and Kingsford original charcoal. Each time, the wood and coal started easily and quickly. the chimney allowed the flames to reach all the way through the coals. Although there was a slight odor, it is nothing like the overpowering odor of starter fluid. I did not detect any chemical odor remaining on the wood/charcoal. The only reason I did not give 4 stars is because several of the squares did not burn completely, although they all burned well long enough to do the job. I suspect they will accumulate moisture, so I keep them in a zip-lock bag in my kitchen.

I bought these Midwest Hearth charcoal starters from the Amazon Warehouse this time because not only the price was definitely interesting, but above all because this product is 100% made in the USA from paraffin mixed with chips of wood and recycled newsprints so it is safer than many other chemical staters on the market. When you read about the chemical residues left on grilled meats you want to think twice before buying whatever product. If I could I would use pine cones or non treated wine sarments, but here in texas it is not so easy to find so Midwest Hearth is the best solution I have found until now. It is the second time I order them on Amazon. They are really economical and efficient: in effect, they come in a pack of 4 plates you have to break, but no tools needed here as each brick is already pre-cut into 6 individual squares. I only need half of one starter to light my bbq and it is more than enough for my charcoal to burn so these 24 squares pack will last for months. a match or a lighter and that is it! I like the fact they do not have a bad odor at all when burning. These starters function with all kind of charcoal bbq or smokers supposedly. I really like this product so I give it 5 stars. Thank you the warehouse for such a good price.
