Its a chunk of wood, that was finished by burning it I think with a propane torch. You have to drill the holes in it to hang it. The front of it had holes from some nail or drill bit with splintered chunks missing that missed the finishing process. You need a long 1/2 inch 7 inch bit to insert the bracket to hang it. I can find a piece of scrap wood and do it myself. They might as well have just sold the brackets and let you hunt for the wood. Had the holes been pre-drilled I probably would have let my natural apathy take over and keep it, but I did not have the proper length drill bit in my tool selection. Anyways, it does not look like the photo. It looked like something I might put behind my tire to keep it from rolling while I worked on it. With the amount of labor it will take to drill holes, secure bracket and punch two holes in the wall and hope it's stable without a tilt, my advice is to keep looking for that perfectly distressed shelf.

Beautiful shelves! Great quality installation was a little tricky. All and all worth it.

I purchased a 42" and two 24" floating shelves and I absolutely love everything about them. From them being one hundred year old reclaimed wood with flaws and nails to the system used for hanging them. Most of all I Love the way they look. They are truly the finishing touch my bathroom remodel needed. Thank You.

This mantel is beautiful. It is sturdy and we love the way the natural wood looks. It was pretty easy to install, and the size of it matches the description. It is the perfect addition to our living room, and the perfect location to hang our stockings on in December. we LOVE it

I love my mantel! Ordered the mantel and corbels at the same time. Only the mantel shipped to us. Company was great to work with and responded quickly and was able to get situation resolved! Would definitely recommend!

The materials were top-notch. The wood is absolutely beautiful, downside, the screws are not strong enough to really hold the brackets in place. The larger shelves should have more than two brackets. Three or more would be best due to the weight. Having to drill your own holes is a bummer.

These are rough cut old reclaimed timber so do not expect them to be smooth and perfect. These are great for a rustic look. The wood I was shipped was from the late 1800’s from a barn in PA. It had a couple of peg holes which gives it character. It does come with hardware to mount but if you have a longer piece you will want to add some. I used the hardware that came with it to land on the center studs. I then added addition lag type bolts at the ends for added support, again these are in studs. You will need some deep 1/2” drill bits to drill the holes for the supports and will need to go about 5-1/2” deep. Take your time, plan it out and measure twice and it will go up in a little more than an hour. This is a great price for some historic wood that will add to the character of your home. Remember no 2 pieces will be the same and there will be some slight imperfections. The big plus is it is solid wood and not a box built mantel.
