National Geographic World Maps

Setting the highest standard for cartographic excellence

Since publishing its first World Map in 1922, National Geographic has excelled in the art and science of mapmaking. National Geographic’s unique cartographic style is defined by beautiful color palettes, proprietary typefaces, hand-drawn shaded relief, and carefully researched content. The attention to detail and accuracy is what really sets National Geographic apart from other mapmakers. Each World Map has been carefully compiled based upon the latest data sources and independent verification of disputed boundaries, borders, and territories. When this level of research is combined with great design, the result is the best line of World Maps currently available.

Four distinctive styles

World Classic

Classic

The Classic style is the traditional National Geographic design that has been featured in so many of the maps produced as supplements in the National Geographic Magazine over the years. Highlights include blue oceans with bathymetric contour steps, brightly-colored tint bands along country borders, and hand-drawn shaded relief. This style contains the highest level of detail. This map is presented in the Winkel Tripel projection, which minimizes distortion and creates a very recognizable shape of the Earth.

World Executive Map

Executive

The Executive style is a perfect match for home and office décor as it pairs nicely with wood and leather furnishings. Featuring an antique, earth-tone color palette combined with up-to-date cartography, this has become National Geographic’s bestselling World Map design. The subdued beige of the oceans is enhanced with bathymetric shading showing underwater terrain features. This style contains the highest level of detail. This map is presented in the Winkel Tripel projection, which minimizes distortion and creates a very recognizable shape of the Earth.

World Decorator Map

Decorator

The Decorator style is the brightest of the National Geographic World Map designs and is perfect for kids’ bedrooms, classrooms, and those who want a pop of color on the wall. Featuring solid colors filling each country, pale blue oceans with bathymetric shaded relief, and a black border around the whole image, this World Map is beautiful and easy-to-read. This style contains the second highest level of detail. This map is presented in the Winkel Tripel projection, which minimizes distortion and creates a very recognizable shape of the Earth.

World Modern Map

Modern

The Modern style is the minimalist amongst National Geographic’s World Map designs. It simply presents the beautiful shape of the Earth’s land mass, in solid black, sitting on top of slate blue/gray oceans. This map also includes country names, borders, and major cities in contrasting white. This design is compatible with modern home and office décor, pairing well with glass and metal furnishings. This style contains the lowest level of detail. This map was developed using the Times projection, which features minimal distortion in the equatorial regions of the Earth.

It’s laminated so great for toddlers and kids who may want to trace country outlines. The country colors are consistent with natgeo atlas books if you have them

I wanted a large map of the Pacific Basin — I’m mainly trying to solidify in my memory where all the various islands are in relation to each other and the Equator. It’s harder than you might think to find such a map when you live in the New World — maps tend to center on the Atlantic and its sides. If I’d waited a few years I could no doubt have found a similar map with a better depiction of Zealandia but such a thing doesn’t seem to currently exist. I’ll live.

Finding good Pacific-centered maps here in the Pacific has been challenging. Finding this great laminated map was a godsend: priced-right and pretty much permanent.

Purchased this for my High School World History classes. Great quality Pacific Centered map. My students say they like it better than the Atlantic Centered map. I love being able to write all over it, the laminate was done beautifully. Great buy!

Most world maps have a Atlantic view and split the Pacific which doesn't give you a perspective as to how large the Pacific Ocean is, I have a couple of those that have different aspects of the world.Nice added features are over head view of North and South poles, Vegetation and land use, Population Density, and Countries square miles chart. Plus it is a great size for viewing.

I have been looking for a world map like this for several years and finally found this one, by National Geographic no less! It didn’t disappoint! This map is Pacific centered, not the usual Atlantic centered format. It means the Pacific Islands are not split at the dateline and stuck divided on both edges of the map, instead of integrated and visable as a whole. While this is particularly attractive to people who have lived in the Pacific, as I have, it also strikes me as a more appropriate layout of our world. High quality map, nicely laminated. Highly recommended!

The Pacific projection is exactly what I needed for my DVD Movie I am making showing a travel route that I took across the Pacific Ocean that began in Orlando, Florida to Guam, Saipan, and Cairns, Aus. I would recommend mounting the map between clear acrylic sheet material and a masonite back mounted in a frame, as it will develop some air bubbles if you use spray contact glue, or use a cabinet contact cement that is brushed on both the back of the map and the mounting sheet.
