About this item

  • Rectangular shape for sharpening mill or circular saws, draw filing, and finishing metals, with tapered width to ease access into grooves
  • American pattern file for non-precision material removal
  • Single-cut teeth on sides and edges for finishing, sharpening, and deburring
  • Square edges for filing sharp corners
  • Tang for use with an optional handle (sold separately)

The Nicholson mill hand file has a rectangular shape and single-cut American pattern teeth on the sides and edges for sharpening mill or circular saws, draw filing, and finishing metals. The file tapers slightly toward the point to ease access into grooves. The file has single-cut American pattern teeth for finishing, sharpening, and deburring, and square edges for filing sharp corners. The tang can be used with an optional handle for secure gripping (sold separately).

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth have single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother, more precise finish than equivalent American pattern files.

Nicholson manufactures hand tools and power tool accessories. The company is headquartered in Sparks, MD.

If you actually want a Good file you have to pay extra. I did, and it is worth it.

When I bought this, I thought it was going to be much bigger. It works great as a mill smooth and it’s helped me out a lot with my small crafts, but make sure you pay attention to size. I could fit this file into a school pencil pouch lol. Totally my fault for not paying attention to the scale.

Nicholson started outsourcing file work to Mexico and a Brazil some years ago, and the quality of some of those files and rasps were not good. This file, however, performed very well- better than you’d expect, given the price. I bought it to work on the sharp fret ends of an inexpensive bass guitar, and it did a good job there. It’s a convenient size for this sort of work, and it leave a smooth surface.

I have a (new) Nicholson lathe file that I’ve liked just fine, so I was confused by all the reviews out there saying their quality had tanked. Now I get it. This mill file came warped, and pretty soft compared to other files I’ve liked. Do yourself a favor and try a Simonds. That’s what I bought after hacking off a chunk of this absolute piece from Nicholson and dulling it into a burr file. About all it’s decent for, and it’s even too thin for that!

A great draw file made of quality American steel. Have bought two; one for a friend and one for me. Does an excellent job of putting an edge back on your axe or machete. Recommend it to all that need this sort of dependable, portable, sharping ability.

This is a well made file, useful for filing guitar frets and iron bars. Also, not as oily as some tools, so Cousin Jessie can eat the cake without getting that weird taste in his mouth. We hope to see him in a couple of months, if all goes well.
