They contribute to the reduction of vegetal characters, bind color, and build middle body and mouth feel when used during fermentation. Post fermentation will tend to offer noticeable toasty oak components, lift the nose and enhance the body of the wine. In addition, it will impart premium oak characteristics. A small amount added just prior to bottling will heighten the finished oak character and leave a lingering toasty quality. French Untoasted Oak provides rich, round, sweet creamy characters of vanilla, condensed milk, whipped cream and vanilla pudding.

If you were looking for wood chips, you may want to reconsider, these are definitely shards of wood and a bunch of dust at the bottom of the bag.

Don't usually write reviews but felt compelled to on this one! This is perfect for turning an inexpensive wine into a standout. Throw in about .10oz per bottle and within 24hrs, you have an outstanding wine. Not Kidding!

If you're looking for "chips", fingernail and larger chips of oak for wine making, this is not the product you are looking for. The product is more like shredded oak -- exactly as the picture shows. The name is misleading, but the picture is spot on.I was looking for granular oak for primary fermentation, but could not find anything at a reasonable price. Accepting I had to go with chips, I found this product, and it is as close to granular as I could find. This will be used for primary fermentation for a Bordeaux-style blend of grapes. As other reviews state, the smell is amazing.Suggestion: purchase a cheesecloth hops bag and put the oak in it before dropping in the fermenter. This will make removal far easier. A nylon bag can be used, but getting splinters out of the bag will be more trouble than it is worth.

Wow, did this product work as advertised! My brother-in-law and I made a large batch of wine using Zinfindel and Petite Shiraz grapes and these wood chips really finished it off nicely. The wine is pleasant, light and drinkable after just 3 months, that's amazing. Of course, we're going to let it age for a year before mass consumption but the trial tasting has been amazing. Best batch we ever made after adding these Oak chips.

Definitely a medium toast, but pretty finely shredded as opposed to chips, at least in the bag I received. Still, it delivered on flavor.. just a little messy after racking.

I especially like this shredded oak....it transfers the oak flavor to the wine faster. I like to take a bottle of Shiraz and pour in a larger container and add 1 ounce of this oak. Let sit for several days, strain.....delicious!

Great for adding more more character to bourbon. The product is fairly finely shredded wood but not dusty or granular. When I first opened the bag I immediately noticed an intense array of aromas including molasses, brown sugar, and spice bread. The product looked exactly like the advertising photo. The extraction of flavors and fragrances is fairly quick taking only a week to add darker color and more character to spirits. When tasting I found new notes of baking spices, brown sugar, vanilla, salted butter, and caramel. My spirit ABV was 51%. About 1 tbsp of the French oak was added per liter of base spirit.
