Pirastro Obligato strings are based on an exclusive new core material, along with advances in manufacturing techniques, resulting in the true warmth and complex overtones of gut core strings with the stability and quick response of synthetic core strings. Obligato has also demonstrated quick break in time, exceptional projection, and unusual durability.

String works well and is an authentic Pirastro Obligato string

After doing some research, I ordered an Obligato A string to try with my Olive G and Eudoxa D. It took a few days to open up, but once it did, the tone was beautiful. I like it much better than the Dominant A but I think the Dominant strings last longer... Still experimenting with different strings. So far, nothing compares to gut!

I love Obligatos, and this is a really solid A string! Be gentle with it, though; I've messed up the aluminum winding on more than one of these Obligato A strings by pressing too hard on the fingerboard or cleaning too aggressively with a cloth. It has a solid, loud tone on my fiddle, with some beef to it compared to other A strings which can often be too bright. The Obligato A has a lovely nasal moan, when you want it. As with any string that has aluminum winding, give it well over a week of playing it often before the sound settles in. Aluminum wrapped strings often sound harsh and thin at first before you've broken it in, and this is definitely true for the Obligato A string. Especially recommended for fiddles that are naturally more on the bright side, e.g. fiddles that aren't terribly old.

Shrill and tinny, I thought it was supposed to be dark and complex. After trying on two different violins, I gave up. $20 wasted. I may try another Obligato string, the D or G, but I won't buy the A again.

These strings are some of my favourites. They're rich, full, and warm. Slightly slower response time, so if you're trying to play that crazy flight of the bumblebee song, use something else. If you want a beautiful rendition of Jesu, joy of Man's Desiring, these are great! Crisp enough for fairly fast playing, but they are a bit slower than, say, Thomastik Dominants. They also don't change pitch as much as true gut strings with variations in temperature and humidity, and they're fairly stretchy -- so tuning takes more turns/hz than steel core strings. (which, to me, makes it easier to get the tuning just right and keep it that way)
