I suppose i should already know what im doing when purchasing this, but it doesnt come with instructions, or any sort of explanation on how to open it up or switch things out. Other than that, it does its job as an exit sign even though i dont have it connected to a power source yet.

This is a great kit with two highly flexible EXIT signs. These signs can be installed one sided against a wall or two sided from a ceiling. It comes with the wall mount panel installed on the back side, but there is another EXIT sign panel included in the box if you want to ceiling mount it and have both sides illuminated. Also included are inserts that you can use to block one or both of the directional arrows on either side of the word EXIT to point to the exit. In my wall mount installation, I put the sign right over the exit door so I blocked both arrows. When installed on a wall, the back panel has knock outs to mount this on a circular or rectangle electrical box. It comes with mounting screws, though they were the wrong thread size for my rectangular outlet box. Wiring is very simple and you can connect it to a 110v or 220v power source. When connected to power, lights inside the box light up the EXIT word and arrows, and the batteries keep these lights on when the electricity is off. The emergency lights illuminate when the power goes out, and you can also test them with a push button on the bottom of the box. This is where these units fall down a little - the white lights are not very bright - about like a common flashlight. So this probably wouldn’t work to light up a large area, but I installed one in a small office room and adjoining short hallway and it works fine to be able to find your way to the exit. I would be concerned though if there were a fire and smoke were to cover the lights. I’m not sure they’d be of any use. But for a simple power outage this works OK.Since this comes with two units I believe it to be a good value. Just be sure you’re not trying to illuminate a large room or long hallway because the lights are just not very bright.

I live in an area that experiences power outages frequently so I have invested in a plug in generator. I already had a battery backup light installed above the breaker panel to make it easier to see what I was doing when the power went out and I needed to switch everything over to generator. Works awesome. So, when I saw this available, I thought how cool that would be to have at my garage exit to illuminate the way to the outside. Not that I needed a reminder where to exit, but you never know when you may have guests and an emergency arises. But quiet honestly, it's the illumination I really wanted and it makes the garage look commercial.The sign is made of a nice plastic, not cheap. I didn't realize when I ordered it that it has so many options to mount, that was smart. Even the option to remove the solid back plate and have the EXIT on both sides. Just a few negatives - When I tried to open the sign to remove the bracket and wire I broke one of the four clips that secure the sign face plate. I said it was made of nice plastic, but I guess I used too much force. The other issue is, the knock outs for screws or the romex connector does not knock out easily, I had to use my dremmel cutting tool to open them up. . Overall I would recommend to purchase and provide lighting to your exit - you never know!
