Perko's 8501 Series battery selector switches are among the most popular battery switches ever produced. Their use of the traditional Perko bolt circle makes for easy installation, whether new or as a replacement. These switches can be mounted in numerous locations. And as ignition protected switches, they can be installed in the engine rooms of gasoline powered boats. In addition to doing everything a battery disconnect switch does, battery selector switches permit battery selection (of two or more batteries) for specific purposes including starting engines, running accessories or even recharging. They allow for the use of one or more batteries in systems with one or more engines and facilitate putting batteries in parallel for emergency starting when one or both batteries are substantially discharged. Perko battery switches are designed for surface mounting. Standard duty switches have a bright red polycarbonate housing for safety with a large easy-to-turn black knob. The housing of the heavy duty switches are red fiber-reinforced polycarbonate. Selector switches are designed with a make before break feature. This allows switching between the 1, the ALL and the 2 positions while the engine is running. Models with an Alternator Field Disconnect feature offer protection for Non-Unitized Alternators should the switch accidentally be turned to the OFF position with the engine running.

Easy process to make the change from the standard switch which worked fine, to this locking style which is an exact match for the original screw holes. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT ALL ASSOCIATED BATTERIES TO AVOID A SHORT CIRCUIT AND POSSIBLE FIRE AND INJURY! Removed the mounting screws, found the correct wrench/socket to disconnect the electrical terminals by removing the securing nuts. Make note of where each wire was connected. Remove the nuts on the back of the locking switch, set each of the wire lugs in the correct position one at a time and secure with the nut and washer provided. Lightly snug all screw post until every wire lug is correctly in place. Ten fully snug each of the nuts. Remount into the same screw holes. reconnect the battery connections, and test switch for function and locking. Very straight forward. Wash your hands after to remove any lead acquired from the battery posts.

Great switch but key lock is not smooth and binds...

Excellent quality. Made-In-The-USA. Original foot print too. No alteration of the panel was necessary. Lined right up with the old holes. Switch is a little stiff. At least it won't get accidentally turned! Key works flawlessly.

I bought the switch so I could add a second battery to my boat, and I did not want to be stranded in the middle of the lake because we listened to a little too much music while swimming.Pros: Simple install, the wiring diagram is easy to follow and dummy proof as long as you have a bit of knowledge on how batteries work. Ie positive and negative. The switch itself is robust, the part feels strong and should last longer than the boat. I bought the one with the lock just because it was a buck more.... I don't know if I'll use the lock, but it's good to know it's there.Cons: the only complaint I have, and it's pretty minor is that it does not come with mounting bolts... I guess the switch can't guess how I'm going to mount it, but some bolts, locking washers and nuts would have been nice and I would not have had to walk around Home Depot with the thing to make sure I can bolts that fit.Overall, good product

This is a wonderful item. I had one in my ski boat and I sold it and bought a pontoon. I purchased this item thru Amazon and had it in a couple days. It only takes about an hour to install and another battery. Its great to be able to shut down the power completely when its not in use. Also you can switch to either battery or both and charge them while you are running. I will have one on every boat I ever have. Great product.
