Very good value in an inexpensive fountain pen. In use it's comfortable. The medium sized nib gives a line that is between fine and medium. Requires a cartridge (enclosed with the pen) or an insert (purchased separately) that enables bottled ink to refill the pen. Uses only Pilot cartridges (can be bought separately). The enclosed cartridge took some time for the ink to flow down into the nib, but after that the ink flowed well. It's made of plastic but seems substantial enough. There is no hook to hang it in a pocket.

Write nice with parker ink but with pilot ink is like a hot knife in butter.

Just an FYI for newbies like me. I started with the extra fine nib and is is super super fine. Read some reviews and bought a second one with a medium nib and it is perfect.

パイロットらしいしっかりとしたペン先で非常に書きやすい。字幅も表示どおりで、これもパイロットらしさがでている。万年筆で迷うならこれでしょう。

very smooth, consistent, and fluent. Works well on all kinds of papers such as Rhodia, Tomoe River, Leuchtturn etc. IMHO, it is a better deal than Lamy Safari/Al-Star.

if the Pilot Metropolitan and the Lamy Safari had a baby, it would be the Pilot Kakuno. It is a pleasure to use because of Pilots amazing nibs/ink. You will not regret purchasing this if you are just getting yourself into fountain pens, or are looking for a good sturdy on the go pen. Because it is plastic, you dont have to worry so much about it getting scratched up.

This is a great little pen for the price... it's a wet, smooth writer that gets daily use and the smiley on the nib cheers me up. :o)Maybe I can save you a little research time; the charcoal version has the standard smiley and the white pastel ones have the winking smiley. Being a traditionalist, I went with the standard smiley. (Lol)

Love it! Love the design! Love the colors of the plastic! Love the shapes! Love the quality! Everything!NOTE: in these photos the cap may appear as soft and some vendors do use the phrase "soft cap." However, that is NOT true. The cap is made out of hard plastic, the same as the barrel. That plastic feels to be similar to plastic used in LEGO parts.Great news: the feed and the nib of this pen and the Plumix (with 1 mm stub) ARE interchangeable! Just take a paper napkin (to prevent leaving skin oil on the nib and the feed), grab around the nib and the feed, and pull them out carefully. The swapping between two pens take seconds! Also, it is extremely important and useful for cleaning. If you will forget one of your Pilot Kakuno pens with ink for a while or worse, with permanent ink, then you don't need to panic. Just disassemble and clean! I use mine for testing permanent inks where I cannot risk pens from other brands that are not as easy to disassemble. The size of the pen is just right for sketching. I have family big hands, but I love this design! By the way, there is a small knob on the cap to make it easier for removing the cap. Also, it is great that it does NOT have a clip on the cap! I love it! Those clips always get in my way.I own Lamy and Pelican, but after trying my friend's Pilot Kakuno, I was hooked and purchased four of these in various colors and nibs along with four of Plumix (for their 1 mm stubs).

Took 2.5 weeks to get to me from Japan. Long wait but definitely worth it. It is such a smooth writer. The medium nib is actually finer than European medium, and being plastic makes it light and comfortable if you need to write pages after pages. The cap is of beautiful lime green colour. Have been recommending this pen to my friends who love fountain pens, they also find it a remarkable writer.

Bought it as a gift to my little sister. It came in 2 months later. Luckily she just got accepted into her dream school that day so it worked out in the end but keep in mind that you might not be so lucky. Anyway, she has big handwriting and the medium nib (fine for European standards) works very well. It comes with a single cartridge of black ink, but once it finishes we'll be able to fill it up with her colored ink instead. Writes smooth, has her favorite colors, and it's cute as a button. Who can succumb to angsty teenage drama when you have a cute smiley face staring up at you from your pen?!

This was the first fountain pen I’ve ever owned and I’d say it works pretty well for its price. I originally got this to sketch with, but I ended up liking it so much I now write with it too. The nib writes smoothly but it does occasionally skip, especially if you use cheap ink that’s not 100% fountain-pen safe, like Higgins Fountain Pen India ink. I find that if you’re using cheaper ink, the writing’s less smooth and you’ll have to press just a little harder than with fountain pen ink from let’s say, J Herbin. There’s very little line variation, and you’ll only get a bit of a thicker line if you press really hard, but that’s not what this nib is made for. The pen is pretty light since it’s made of cheap plastic, and you can tell when you need a ink refill because it’s going to feel really light. It doesn’t come with a converter, so you’re going to have to buy that separately. If you’re just starting to get into the world of fountain pens, I’d say this is a pretty good choice for a first fountain pen. The only complaints I have with this pen is that since it’s cheap, the plastic isn’t very durable and my cap has cracked a little bit from being stuck to the back of the pen. If you’re a person who drops things a lot, then I would suggest spending a little more money and buying the Pilot Metropolitan instead. Other than that, there isn’t much to complain about.Just a thing to be aware of - the Pilot medium nib is thinner than other western medium-sized nibs like those from Lamy, so a Pilot medium is about the same size as a western fine or even extra-fine nib size.
