I bought this for my father, when he goes on road trips across the state and sometimes through remote areas. It would be awful if he were in an accident with no one around and was unable to get out of his seatbelt and car. I’ve looked at other similar devices, but I just don’t trust a spring-loaded device, especially given some of the reviews where the springs wouldn’t actuate on testing. One this is for certain and that there’s nothing to fail on a hammer.This hammer is one very solid piece of metal, clocking in at just over 316 grams (0.7 pounds). It may not seem like a lot but given the small size it ends up being a very dense object. This means once you start it moving, it will carry its way though the motion due to the weight. All of that energy will be concentrated into the very small pin at the tip and shatter glass with little effort. The knurling on the handles provides a good texture that makes the hammer very easy to grip. I’m a large man and you can see that it fits very nicely in my hand. This hammer, like most others you are probably familiar with, will destroy pretty much anything it hits. This means that if you need it to break into other parts of the car, it will probably help you with that as well.The hammer comes with a nice little drawstring bag to place it in so that it won’t scratch other belongings when you store it in the glove box or console. It also comes with a small piece of glass to test the hammer out on. I’m saving that for my dad to try. What it doesn’t come with is instructions, so you’ll have to look elsewhere for that info. Basically, aim for the corners of the window where the glass is weakest. The seatbelt cutter is also nice, in that it’s tucked in under the top of the hammer. This means that you don’t need to change your grip on the hammer, you just pull it downward to cut. That’s very smart because most people will not be thinking clearly after an accident, so the most natural and simple motions do not take much effort and will be the most likely to succeed on first try.This is an excellent emergency tool that belongs in every vehicle. I hope he never needs to use it.

I keep a variety of emergency items in my cars -- including tiny glass/window-breakers and seatbelt/clothing cutters to full-sized scissors/shears, crowbars, hammers, first-aid kits, etc... But I figure you can never have too many items like this stashed around, to make sure you've always got what you need in easy reach (okay, so maybe you could end up having too many, if it turns into clutter -- but then you could always give some emergency items like this to your friends and relatives instead haha).... In terms of items like this, this little metal hammer is quite good -- it's a bit bigger and more substantial feeling than some tiny keychain-sized window-breakers I've owned, while still being pretty discreet and small enough to easily store in a glove-compartment and sunglasses compartment in a car, or stash in backpack, etc.... It can definitely break glass. The razor/cutter takes more effort to use, but it's better than nothing (and pretty standard in terms of this type of device -- unless you've got good fabric-cutting scissors, then cutting through a seat-belt is never going to be easy)...One thing I'll ding this item on is that it could use more directions and better labeling; this would be especially useful in case you were planning to send this to someone as a present; I showed this item to a few people and no one could figure out what it was for -- they all guess it was a hammer, but didn't know why a tiny hammer would be needed... And no one could figure out why a round piece of glass was included (it's only here so you can do a one-time test of the hammer -- whack it with the hammer to see how it can break glass).

OK, this item has some "heft" to it. (VERY important if you expect it to break auto glass in an emergency!)It is very nice looking, and I noticed NO manufacturing defects at all while inspecting it closely. It is probably the perfect size for an item like this as it isn't "too big" that you can't put it in the glovebox or the door cubby, but not too small either to where it cannot do the job it is meant for!The seatbelt cutter is tucked away enough that you won't cut yourself on it, but still would be able to use it when needed IMO.The price at the time of review is under $20 which could be considered "High" if you were not talking about an item that is well worth the price and NOT something you want to "save" a couple of bucks and end up with a lightweight hammer that won't break a teacup! If you are looking for an emergency hammer, this is the one to get IMO.

This tool will not fail you thanks to its construction & heftiness. It cannot be light weight & effective for breaking out the vehicle glass. I noticed that the seatbelt cutting blade can be replaced. Hopefully, I'll never have to use this beyond giving it a quick test.
