I really liked the source, I had a fiio ka 3, but I liked the sound of this one much better.

I have an iBasso DC04 (non-pro) as well as an iFi Hip Dac 2, but I don't like the separate volume app that the iBasso needs on Android, and the Hip Dac is just too bulky and overkill to drive my Audio64 U4s IEM's. I had read some good reviews of this Shanling, and picked it up on Prime Day.At first blush, I though the performance was very good, and the OLED with integrated volume buttons were really nice improvements. But then on critical listening, things went off the rails. Right from the start, I noticed that the OLED seemed "stuck". It wasn't changing on my Pixel 8 Pro as I went through different tracks in Tidal, despite the fact that Tidal had access to the DAC. Everything was showing as 48 kHz PCM. After rebooting, plugging in and unplugging, I did get it to recognize one MQA track as MQA, but subsequent FLAC tracks were showing as MQA at the wrong rate. Then I connected it to my Windows laptop. It took a ton of trial and error to get it to properly change modes between tracks, but I got there, eventually. Tidal needs exclusive mode (not surprising) but apparently, the DAC gets very unhappy if you pass MQA to it for decoding. Weird. But, hey, we've got it functional, right?Well... I guess. I started messing with the filters because some tracks were strangely bass-heavy (as rendered by the DAC) with hollow mids. Tinkering with the filters made the inverse possible, but there were some tracks that just didn't sound right. I started doing A/B testing with my other DACs to confirm, and it was as I thought. There doesn't seem to be a "don't color this at all" filter or setting. As much as I like the display and the price, I think this is going back.

Warm, rich, textured and meaty delivery. Oled screen is very informative and helpful. Plenty of power for Shozy P20 planar and Aful Performer 5 iems. Would not hesitate to buy again.

I have a Sony nw a306 that I bought for streaming. It's a great player except the volume couldn't compare to my nw a55. I needed an amp. I researched quite a few and new all about the shanling products. I must say this little dac/amp blew me away. It says quality all over it. It identified every format correctly and it's very easy to use. Wish it came with a small case but I think it's still a bargain. But the sound is beyond fantastic. I highly recommend it. Since I just received this unit today, I'm not sure about battery drain, but if it's an issue, I'll follow up.

I’m not an audiophile, but streaming music from Amazon Music sounds much better when I use the DAC with my iPhone with both headphones and through my receiver. The display on the DAC is also very useful.

Doesn’t work well with balanced armatures or planar iem’s. Produces an annoying layering of sound with these types over the treble section of music. Less noticeable with my dynamic driver iem’s, but still present. I chose the Fiio KA5, which works much better for my ears. The Shanling UA3 was much better than the UA4, but self destructed when the guts pulled out of the casing when removing the cable.

For the 4 months that it worked, I was very more than happy with this unit. Sounded great, functioned well and had decent, if not perfect, software. I used on my Samsung 21 mostly and where I had to return a Sonata for connectivity issue, this thing was rock solid and sounded great! Then, one day, pop! And the smell of fried electronics upon connection. I was past Amazon's return window, 4 months into ownership, so I reached out to Shanling directly. They referred me back to the Shanling storefront that I purchased from on Amazon. Good luck getting through the Amazon Chatbots to get to them! Shanling finally gave me a direct email and so I emailed them twice. After 2 weeks and 5 emails, I gave up on the "support" and reached out to Amazon to return the unit. Taking a 10% loss on the original purchase price, I bit the bullet and sent it back to Amazon, since there was no other recourse.Disappointed to say the least. Hopefully your experience isn't the same. I'm onto a competitor's product now and guess I won't be buying Shanling products in the future. Such a shame, as it was an elegant product when it worked. I would have loved to have tried a replacement unit, as not every mass produced item is gonna be 100%. Oh well.
