Good quality metal niche. The black coating on it feels and looks smooth and elegant. I like that it just sets in, no need to tile over it. I scratched at the finish on it in an inconspicuous spot and it didn't leave any mark. Since most things in the shower aren't going to be metal I think this will hold up well.
