About this item

  • Supercardioid polar pattern specifically targets the sound source consistently with greatly minimized bleed from off-axis sound sources
  • Tailored for superior transient response from a low-mass, 1” externally-biased, ultra-thin 24 Karat gold-layered Mylar diaphragm
  • Flat, neutral frequency response for natural reproduction on stage or in the studio
  • 3-position switchable low-frequency filter helps reduce unwanted background noise or counteract proximity effect for consistent, extended lowend
  • -15 dB switchable attenuator handles extremely high SPLs with ease
  • Premium electronic components and gold-plated internal and external connectors
  • Internal pop filter with three separate mesh layers reduces wind and breath noise

The BETA 27 side-address condenser microphone is precision engineered for professional sound reinforcement and project studio recording applications. Its flat frequency response and low self-noise provide unerring performance in demanding environments. A tight supercardioid pattern ensures high gain-before-feedback and maximum isolation from other sound sources.

The Shure Beta 27 is large diaphragm side-address FET condenser mic. It differs from the very similar SM27 due to its supercardioid polar pattern, rather than cardioid, and a nearly flat frequency response instead of a typical low treble EQ bump. That flat frequency contour makes it ideal for instruments. Indeed, it sounds natural and smooth for classical guitar and ukulele. I also found it pleasantly natural and balanced for spoken word, albeit some speakers may prefer an EQ bump around 6000 Hz. It has more going on in the deep bass than most mics and my voice benefited from using the 80 Hz high pass filter.Recording into my Tascam 208i, I spoke and sang directly into the capsule from about 12 cm. The mic’s 3-layer mesh grille did a great job of nixing plosives and assorted mouth and breath sounds. I didn't need an external pop filter. Likewise, sibilance was well controlled. The tight supercardioid polar pattern made for above average off-axis rejection of sound, besting most of my mics. Unlike the similar SM27, the Beta 27 is ideal for recording on stages and untreated rooms.I mounted the Beta 27 on a desk boom and no vibrations or hum from the hard drives were present on the tracks. Indeed, the internal shock mount effectively reduced handling and stand noise. With the PodMic USB and the Neumann TLM 102 on the same boom arm, I had to unplug my backup drives to get a clean track. The Beta 27 is a well designed, great sounding and easy to use mic that sounds good on just about anything I threw at it.

Looking for the next level in affordable large diaphragm condenser microphones, you may want to consider this Shure Beta 27. Bought new from the Shure online store, this microphone is very quiet. Next to my significantly warmer Rode NT1, its clearer in the mids/top and has a tight bottom without bloating. I am not a singer so I cannot comment on its vocal abilities however I get the impression that this is a sleeper. If more folks knew.... Capable of withstanding high SPL so it will cope with horns, electric guitar cabinets or drums. It's outstanding clarity and smoothness make it a great choice for home studio or professional use. Originally marketed as an instrument microphone for live use, this model delivers the goods on a variety of sources making it one of the best one-stop-shop mics for a home studio in the intermediate price point of $300-600 that I've found. If you're only wanting to have one mic to cover a multitude of inputs, this could well do it for you. Featuring a tight supercardioid pick up pattern, it has exceptional off-axis rejection meaning it won't pick up as much ambient noise if you're recording in a less-than perfect environment. Has a 15db pad switch and two very useable high pass filter settings. Legendary Shure build quality. It comes in decent original packaging materials including a soft padded case and has a microphone stand adapter but no other accessories. You'll need a cradle if you want to isolate sounds from your floor, and a pop screen if you're going to sing through it. I'm glad I bought this mic.
