  • Simonds is the oldest domestic US cutting tool company today

The Simonds coarse cut hand file has a handle and a rectangular shape with double-cut American pattern teeth on one side and single-cut American pattern teeth on the other for smoothing and shaping straight surfaces. The double-cut teeth are for rapid material removal, and the single-cut teeth on the reverse side are for finishing, sharpening, and deburring. The file has no teeth on one edge to protect adjacent surfaces. A paddle-shaped handle is forged on the end of the file for secure gripping.

Hand files are used to remove material and smooth and shape workpieces. They have forward-facing cutting teeth and cut when pushed over either a stationary or rotating workpiece. Single-cut teeth are single rows cut diagonally across the width of the file. Double-cut teeth have two sets of rows cut in opposite directions. American pattern files have three coarseness grades. Coarse, also known as bastard cut, is suitable for efficient, heavy material removal where finish is not a concern. Medium, also known as second cut, offers average material removal and finish quality. Fine, also known as smooth cut, provides the smoothest finish. Swiss pattern files have eight coarseness grades, from 00 (coarse), 0 (medium), and 1 to 6 (fine to finest), offering a smoother finish than equivalent American pattern files. For Swiss pattern files the length of the tool is the length of the blade, not counting the tang, which is the pointed end fitted for a handle; for American pattern files the length of the tool is its entire length, including the tang.

Simonds International manufactures tools for cutting and finishing. The company, founded in 1832, is headquartered in Fitchburg, MA.

I used to exclusively buy Nicholson files, but their quality has been spotty since they moved their manufacturing outside of the USA. They seem to have fixed that, but I bought this Simonds file to try them out. This file has a single cut and a double cut side, both of which cut very cleanly. It also seems to be holding up pretty well and is still cutting just fine despite being used on annealed tool steel exclusively. I would definitely recommend these.

Cuts fast very hard should be careful not to drop it I'm certain at this level of hardness rough handling could chip it. Not that its a bad file at all quite the opposite

I really like this file. I wanted it to shape or sharpen harder steel items such as my axe, wood chisels, screw drivers that have gotten rounded off etc. This file will cut these metal . I will purchase it again if I would need another

This is still as good as it used to be back when it was made in America. It's plenty sharp and I'll see how long it stands up to being used. Those Honduras boys know what they're doing.Hopefully the temper of the teeth are proper and last well.______________________________________________________Okay, I am editing this because this is my second purchase. The first one I bought was FANTASTIC.It sadly broke because I was uh... Well. I threw a hammer head across my shed and it un-intentionally hit the file I had propped against a stump and it broke it in half and rendered it useless. That file looked just like it was in the image they are selling, but the new one I bought. It's made in India and I was expecting it to be made in Honduras again, but nope. India.I am all for things made by foreign countries and stuff, like even China spits out good products despite a lot of other things not being so great.I've had better luck with things made in China than a few things I've owned made in India.
