Clutch system allows vise to accept bits of variable width shanks. Works best with 3mm diameter shanks. Provides a quick change operation. The handle is light weight and rotates with precision.I returned a used one that I’d bought from eBay, since the jaws of the clutch did not align well. The Amazon version works.

I use this to sharpen my tungstens. Someone stole our old one. Works great for tungstens 1/8” thick.

This is the first pin vise I have seen with 4 jaws, most have 3 and will not grip a square shaft without damaging it

This works great for small metric taps in the 2 to 3mm range. It is not so great for small drill bits, the handle is a tube that is open on the end so the drill bit relies completely on the collet to hold it in place and it slips sometimes.

Perfect for its intended use. Very good quality for a reasonable price. Easy to hold firmly and it does not roll when you set it down.

I've never really been let down by a Starrett tool and this one is no exception. It works well enough and I find it easy to use. I'm using it to hand drill small diameter holes for tapping plastics for screws. In this capacity it works well. I'm betting it's going to work well for my other hobbies such as model cars as well. The one thing I wish it had, and the only reason I won't give it 5 stars, is free rotating pommel on the end of the tool. Something that presses into the palm and allows the tool to be used while applying more pressure. I have a cheaper model that has this feature and I find it indispensable. That said, the thing I really like about this tool is that it can accommodate any length bit as there's a continuous tube running through the center. I did add a tiny dab of anti-seize to the chuck threads because they felt a bit rough in operation. I only managed to get the entire lower half of my body coated in the silvery compound so I considered that a solid success.

This is a very precise tool for holding tiny drill bits for fine work. I would have bought one years ago but did not know the correct term to search. Like all Starrett tools, this is the best quality available.

The tell-tale signs of a precisely-manufactured product are everywhere on this pin vice. It has a quality feel, unlike the cheapies that come in a set with small drills. The clamp screw has a progressive feel, and doesn't rock on the mating threads. The collet expands and contracts smoothly. The machined knurling is deep and uniform. The plastic handle is comfortable, and there's a hole extending completely through so a long drill or rod can be clamped. L. S. Starrett – Athol, MA

I have owned a ton of pin vises over decades. They all work, but no matter what brand they are, they have all been generally cheap "hobby grade" tools. This one, as the name "Starrett" implies, is different. The chuck is precise, it turns bits really true, it iseasy to turn, load and unload bits. The handle feels comfortable in my hand (unlike all those swivel-back or ball-end, or otherpin vises that grate, scrape, stick, etc). The chuck is easy to tighten so that bits won't slip.Speaking of which....yes, it has a CHUCK. No more collet changing! It's more expensive than a $5 or $10 hobby grade one, but it's worth every penny. $23 is not too much to spend for such a nice tool.I'll be getting more of these, and the finer-chuck 166A for really small wire drills.
