Got a P0171 check engine light code. Saved myself an expensive trip to the car shop after reading some information online. People say this code could be one of 10 different problems, but this is the most common one. Replaced my old black gasket with this new updated orange one. Fits perfectly, no real struggle to install. About 40 minutes install while following a youtube video if you’ve never worked in an engine bay before like me, other experts have said it’s only 20 minutes. Solved all issues. Car is smooth and gas mileage is back up.

Seems like Toyota had some issues with this gasket once upon a time. The orange one is supposed to be the updated version. Fit my 2005 corrola perfectly, and was an easy repair!

Got the check engine light and the code for lean bank 1 I think. Replaced the old black gasket with this orange one and 2 weeks later the check engine light is still off and no engine stuttering when the temperature drops. Apparently, when the temperature drops, the metal contracts and the old black gasket wasn't robust enough to accommodate this as functioning gaskets are designed to do.I took the advice of a mechanic who believes in using Genuine Toyota Gaskets as they are not much more expensive than other gaskets and you know they'll fit perfectly. The original gasket was found to be deficient so Toyota redesigned this one to be more robust and it fixed the problem. You see a problem in design, you redesign it so it won't happen again-good enough for me for this simple repair.01-26-20 Update-It's been a year since installing this new gasket and the car is still working perfectly. Don't be afraid to do this job yourself; it's very easy and will save you a "nice chunk of change."10-12-20 Update-Almost 2 years later and this Corolla no longer has the cold starting problem. By the way, make sure you do this job when the engine is cold so you keep the bolt hole thread spacing strong and intact on this aluminum engine. As an aside, I recently replaced the Denso Power Plugs that I installed on this vehicle several years ago for extra power. The car was recently having problems starting & these plugs are supposed to last 30 to 50K miles. Turns out that they were in fact "shot" at almost exactly 30K miles and I reverted back to the OEM Plugs: the Denso Iridium Long Life Plugs. I guess it's true what one youtube mechanic recommended about one should just stick with the OEM Denso Iridium Long Life Plugs as the other new fangled spark plugs don't really make a difference and the Long Life Plugs last a very long time (at least 90 to 100K miles) as I didn't really notice a difference in power between the Power Spark Plugs & the Long Life Spark Plugs.2-25-22 Update-Over 3 years later & still no code & car runs fine.3-19-23 Update-More than 4 years later & still no code & engine runs fine.1-14-24 Update-5 years after installation & still no code & engine runs fine.

The stock part that comes in the car is black and tends to fail creating a seal. The orange one is a genuine upgraded gasket that Toyota released to fix the problem. I purchased this one as a replacement and it's much better quality.
