The Vater brand was officially established in November of 1991, but the Vater family history with drumsticks started decades earlier, in the basement of Boston's legendary Jack's Drum Shop. There, Alan and Ron's grandfather Jack Adams, hand turned drumsticks for the drummers like Buddy Rich as early as 1956. In the early to mid 1980's, the Vater brothers began producing private-label drumsticks alongside sticks for Vic Firth and Zildjian. A few years of this led to the brothers deciding to move their business to a new factory in Holbrook MA. Over the past decade, the Vater family and product line has expanded greatly, introducing innovative products such as the Splash Stick and Acoustic, and welcoming renowned drummers like Chad Smith, Stewart Copeland, and Josh Freeze. At Vater, our goal is simple. . . to produce the very best drumsticks and percussion accessories in the world.

Vater has been making high-quality drumsticks for many years now. These Super Jazz sticks do not disappoint. Bearing in mind that drumsticks are as personal as gloves and shoes as related to good feel, these sticks are a good choice if you want a good all-around stick for many jazz styles and volumes . If they work for you, they're well worth having and enjoying their use.

I usually play Vater Los Angeles 5A sticks, but I wanted to try something a little lighter. These are 1/4" longer with less shoulder / longer taper, so they don't feel front heavy at the LA 5As. The Super Jazz sticks give a little easier control on cymbal wash, but with the extra length you can move your hands back on the sticks a little further to really bash the hell out your kit if you need more power.

The weight and length are perfect and straight as an arrow.

Really wanted to like these, but ultimately found the tips to be far too splashy and brash on thinner jazz cymbals. I much prefer the small tips on the Vic Firth Erskine Ride sticks or American Jazz series. They’re well made and quality sticks, just didn’t work well for jazz in my experience with them.

Great stick but a little more flex and lighter on the ride cymbal (due to taper) than I want for Rock.

I tried this stick as my other Vater favorite, the NOLA Jazz is becoming harder to find. It's a little longer than others but if you get the right weight it feels great!Unfortunately Vater's "weight per pair" ratio (my term;) is not getting any better. Mail ordering makes stick selection much more difficult. I've ordered three pairs over the last week and I've gotten one stick that came in at 47 grams and another at a whopping 58!If you get lucky you'll find a great jazz stick. Unfortunately you'll also get a few that feel like dense 5as.

I've been playing Vater sticks for about 15 years. They are the most durable and offer the widest stick selection from any manufacturer and I played all of the major competitors over the coarse of 35 years. All good brands but Vater is more durable because they keep a higher moisture content in the hickory and maple they use. Some will say this could lead to warping but I never experienced that. They dent when they wear rather than fray. I'll stop using a stick when I think it's worn down enough to the point I think it could break but I've yet to have a Vater stick break on me. Stick selection is highly personal but these Super Jazz sticks are my current go to stick. I play everything from light acoustic to heavy rock. They fall between a 7A and 5A in diameter but are a little longer at 16-3/8". They also have a long taper and a oval tip which makes it a very quick feeling stick. The added length makes it versatile so you can grip back a little if you need a little more power. Once in a great while I'll use the Pro Rock model which is the same dimentions but has a thicker shoulder when I really want to lay in but most of the time I use the Super Jazz for most everything. If you desire a standard 16" length stick at the same diameter, the New Orleans Jazz or the Stewart Copeland Standard are great choices also. No, I'm not endorsed by Vater but I highly recommend their drumsticks.

Vater has been my go-to stick for the past 20 years! This stick has a little extra length then a A5 or A7, with a little more weight then a A7, and a mid-sized tip that makes for a great mid-weight stick, that is a very versatile stick for pop, funk and medium volume rock. Light snare work is easy to to do with the mid weight for hand control, or you can lay down a solid back beat for country or rock playing. I'm a heavy hitter so I have to use a lighter stick to help with the volume, and these sticks hold up very well, long term from warm ups, to practice, and shows. Vater - The best you can get in drumsticks.

I can’t believe the weight of these compared to the sugar maple version!! There are advantages to both kinds of wood. I’m excited about the experimental process I will be undergoing with both kinds.
