Dachstein Woolwear boiled wool mittens are made from boiled wool in a weave so dense they're almost waterproof and have been used by mountaineers for their incredible warmth even when they're covered with snow and ice. Extreme cold weather gear famous for decades in the Alps is now available to you. Made with "4 strands of wool" instead of 3 so these Dachstein boiled wool mittens are extra warm. Dachstein Mittens - my hand measured a hair larger than 7.0 inches so I ordered the next size, 7.5 inches and it's a good fit. The material and craftsmanship are superb. The best woolen item you might ever wear. The mittens will be used as liners in a pair of deerskin leather choppers (shells) but finding the correctly fitting shells might have been a problem, considering the thickness of the Dachstein Wool. I saw a review for the Dachstein mittens that referenced the North Star Unlined Deerskin Chopper. The guy had similar hand measurements as me (he bought a size 8) So, I bought the choppers in size XXL (double X Large). I was worried. But choppers fit over the mittens very well. Not tight, maybe a hair loose but that is good if the choppers become soaked with water, ice and snow. The Dachsteins are perfection and these choppers will add to my winter protection. Bottomline - measure your hand carefully and read reviews

I’ve wanted a pair of these for years to wear under my leather overmitts for years. Finally sprung for them. Fit is perfect with plenty of room in the thumb area to wear a liner glove under (which has been a problem with lower quality mitts). Incredibly warm for the types of activities I wear them in.

Wonderful mittens.Manufacturer says to measure the length of your hand: Size = hand length in inches. BTDT. That method left me with mittens too tight around my knuckles. Size up for better fit. The mittens will then flap around your fingertips a bit and not constrict blood flow past your knuckles. You are not doing brain surgery when you're wearing these, so a little flappage is ok.

I would really like these mittens if the thumb length was not so short. I followed the sizing guide and the rest of the mitten fits comfortably. They are definitely a high quality product and they are the warmest plain wool mittens I’ve ever worn. But the thumbs are so short that it feels like mine will poke through the ends. Also because they are always pressing so hard on the end of my thumbs they are uncomfortable and my thumbs get cold. If they weren’t so expensive I’d just try a larger size, but at almost 80 dollars I’m not willing to try.

The good: quite warm. Looks like it will last for yearsThe not so good: a little scratchy and not impervious to strong winds

Never mind the price - look at the quality. Use their measuring guide and you can't go wrong. I've worn them already in cold, wet weather. They keep you warm even when damp, and they dry in no time at all on a clothes horse near the rad (I wouldn't put them directly on a heat source for fear of shrinkage - not sure if Dachstein wool is pre-shrunk or not). And for really cold weather, they fit perfectly into a pair of cowhide mitts I've had for decades but whose inserts had worn out. Couldn't be happier.

This pair of wool mittens are warm and comfortable. They seem well made and have lasted all winter. One star off for in high wind the cold goes through some.

These are the warmest mittens I have ever owned. The customer service is comparable to shopping at a local farmers market; the family that produces these just makes you feel like one of the family friends. People that are more sensitive to wool than others may want a thin liner to prevent itching or if you plan on using these in windy-alpine conditions you may want a nylon shell to slip over them. Overall these are amazing and are always in my truck or pack when traveling. -I have owned several thinsulate mittens and I feel like these are warmer.

In my quest to find a better layering system for winter backpacking, I came across these mittens. The boiled wool and thick fibers really appealed to me so I decided to buy these. I plan to use thin Marino wool liner gloves under these and so I ordered one size up. The order arrived 2 weeks ahead of the scheduled delivery date and I was pleasently surprised to find a nice, hand written note from the seller. In terms of build, the preformed thumb is very comfortable, but slightly short for my thumb. Hopefully this will change over time, so it's an issue for me. There is thicker material along the knuckle line to keep the tops of your knuckles warm. The mittens are also long enough to fit under the cuff of a jacket, or over the sleeve of a long sleeve shirt.Overall, I'm very impressed and satisfied with this purchase. The only reason I'll dock stars in the future is if they don't hold up to my expectations this winter.
