When I saw this “disposable” retractable fountain pen by Writech, I had to check it out. I’ve seen retractable fountain pens before, but they tend to be pretty pricey in the $150 and up range. At $30 a pen, the Writech Clictek fountain pen is not going to be disposable, exactly, but it’s a lot closer to disposable than the expensive metal body versions other brands have on offer. At first glance, this pen looks a lot like a regular ballpoint pen. But then things get interesting with the snub nosed tip that makes it clear that this pen is a different beast. Pressing down on the clicker causes a door to open at the end and the fountain pen nib to extend out of the barrel. The door remains extended out and fully visible when the pen is in use. Press the clicker again and the pen tip retracts and the door closes.Mechanically, the pen takes a lot of cues from ballpoint pens, but the big difference is the door mechanism. The top of the pen is a rubber gasket and the door seals up against it when it’s closed via a spring loaded mechanism. There is an internal gasket as well so when the pen is closed, the nib is sealed in an airtight chamber. It’s quite effective and seems to be good enough to keep the pen ink from drying out. I do have concerns about longevity of the door mechanism since the door and hinges are all plastic. But I expect that you’ll be able to use this pen for a long time before it actually breaks. It uses cartridges that appear to be proprietary. There are five refills in the package and since standard fountain pen carts don’t work on this pen, you’ll have to order more. This pen is far too niche to show up in office supply stores… though I could be wrong. In use, the pen writes nicely. It has a narrow steel nib that feels fairly durable. It’s not as nice as a more expensive pen would be, but it’s very serviceable as a daily driver, I’d say, and given that it isn’t so expensive, I wouldn’t be as afraid to take it out of the house and potentially lose it.Bottom Line: I’m somewhat impressed. It seems like Writech came up with a serviceable design for fairly cheap plastic fountain pen. It’s really fairly ingenious. I’m not sure how broad the market is for a more disposable retractable fountain pen, but if there is one, this will undoubtedly attract attention. I wish they didn’t use proprietary cartridges, but overall, my response is pretty positive. I think this pen is a winner!
