It works great, was worried it would lock the tires abruptly and tend to break stuff, but the design keeps tires locked until you turn without load on the engine. So basically you don't notice it locking but it makes wheelin way better, makes you rig mucho better, your rig can basically climb up a wall with this locker. Makes some noises but come on, you ain't driving a Lamborghini, turn the music up if it bothers you.

I've had this product on the rear of my 97 Jeep XJ (2WD) for about 20k miles. It is my daily driver and I drive mostly on paved roads, but I drive on remote country dirt roads and trails occasionally and wanted to avoid getting stuck in the mud so I put the auto locker in. (had to get winched off the shoulder of a gravel road one day because all my power was going to the wheel on the soft shoulder, which obviously wouldn't have been an issue if I had 4wd). On the street, If you aren't gassing it too hard while turning the locker doesn't lock so the tires don't chirp from sliding on the pavement (so no early damage to the tires as far as I can tell) only a ratchet sound from the auto locker functioning as it should. After first installing, I thought my gas mileage got a little worse compared to the original spider gears, but it may only be that I wasn't used to driving with the auto locker yet. Last tank of gas I got combined mileage of 16mpg which is right in line with what this vehicle is supposed to get while new. It wasn't hard to install and I would do it again for that piece of mind.Update 2024-06-20: Now it's been 5 years and 50k miles since the locker was installed. Still no issues!

Important notes:I installed this in a 4 door XJ. If installed in a shorter vehicle your handling maybe different. This is not my daily driver. I probably would not install in a daily due to extra tire wear.Saw some stars but no reviews for this locker. Installed in about 2.5 hours after watching a couple videos. No "special" tools needed. Took my time and used a feeler gauge to make sure the gaps were right. After reading the forums I thought this was going to be loud or hard to control in snow. It does make some noise, and it does take a little bit to get used to it in snow (likes to find the low side of the street). But it's just some clicks when turning, maybe a bang when turning while on the gas. In the snow you learn to drive a little different. Basically no gas mid turn unless you want to throw a sweet drift. But going from a standstill in the snow is pretty amazing, just goes without even being in 4x4. Offroad is where this shines. Where I wheel in Colorado and we get a little sand, very little mud, and a ton of loose rocks on steep hills or a wheel in the air. Climbing is much easier and with the added traction I can focus on throttle control. So if you like wheeling this is great. I do prefer an open diff in the snow, but this was pretty easy to get used to, just a preference.
