My mistake was to ignore the red IDE wire - I connected it incorrectly. Once I fixed that it was smooth sailing. The number 1 pin is marked by a triangle on this board. Comes with zero instructions and there is no indication of how to configure as master vs. slave.

nonstandard IDE pin spacing, won't connect to a typical ide adapter. maybe works in a laptop?
