I had no idea what a shear pin was until I got my Honda snow blower and started watching videos online about it. Then I realized why you needed to have a few of these with you at all times while you are snow blowing. This is an actual weaker metal that is meant to break off if something gets lodged in the blades of your snowblower. The screws breaking will actually save the blades and impeller. There is a certain amount of stress that they are able to take, but once that threshold has been reached then they are designed to snap. Some people have perfect driveways and will snap one of these shear pins all winter long, other people may snap a whole bunch in a single day because of hitting solid wood, uneven cement, etc that they couldn't see under the snow. The driveway at my house has a lot of uneven cement along with many obstacles that I won't be able to see, and I would much rather have these with me ready to replace a snapped pin that just saved my blades!
