Symptoms Of A Failing Wheel Bearing & Hub
Wheel hub units are low maintenance parts, but that doesn’t mean they last forever. Uneven road surfaces, heavy driving conditions (such as towing or racing), and under-inflated tires put extra strain on the hub bearing and can lead to premature failure. Common signs of a bad hub unit include:
- 1. ABS system malfunction
- 2. Excessive play in the steering wheel
- 3. A humming, rumbling or growling noise that increases with acceleration
- 4. A loud constant whining or grinding noise when the vehicle is in motion
- 5. Steering wheel vibration that changes with the vehicle speed or as the vehicle turns
Installation Tips:
- Use an Axle Nut Socket to dismantle the axle nut.
- After dismantling the brake caliper, suspend it using a Caliper Hanger to avoid damage to the brake hose.
- A wheel hub removal tool can help dismantle a stubborn wheel hub assembly from the knuckle.
- During installation, use a Torque Wrench to tighten the axle nut to the manufacturer's specification. Do not use an impact wrench as it is easy to over tighten the axle nut.

Had to troubleshoot an ugly noise in the front end of my 2012 Civic. Decided it was the right front bearing. Bought a pair in case I screwed up the first one. Standard install. Noise is gone. Perfect now going on 3 months. Got a spare now if the left front decides to cause trouble. Smooth sailing, just like new. Great price for two. Highly recommended. Remember, one side is magnetized for the abs wheel sensor to read. A paper clip will tell you which side. Magnetized side must face the ABS sensor on install.
