I have a GE water softener, when I tried to slip the cam on the shaft it would slip all the way down. I had to get my calipers out and my needle file kit. It turns out the shaft socket was 1/100th of an inch to small. After 45 minutes of filing and fitting the cam finally would seat properly. It looks like this should be a lasting repair, but the misfitting part added extra time to an otherwise simple fix.

For a few dollars my husband fixed our water softener and we saved a lot by DIY. The old part had a plastic cam (of course) that stripped out after a couple of years so he replaced with this upgraded unit with metal cam and it works great.

Morton -Model M45C. A little tight to get on the shaft. Had to tap it a little extra to get it seated all the way on. If I need to remove it sometime in the future, I will probably have to use a gear puller. The old one had a plastic gear that broke. I'm guessing the new one, being metal, should last a long time.

This part worked as advertised, the new metal gears will increase the longevity of my water softener. So far I’m impressed.

I have been using these softeners for 35 years in 4 new homes. They originally had a metal cam and drive gear and never developed a single problem or failure. Then, in my current home, the drive gear failed after 4 years BECAUSE ALL THE GEARS AND CAM WERE MADE OF PLASTIC. After what was probably the failure of every unit they made they discontinued the plastic and went back to a metal cam and drive gear. The new replacement set (metal) has some issues. The head valve drive shaft is tapered. The metal replacement cam is not tapered. I could not get it completely seated on the tapered shaft. I had to use a triangular file and file the inside of the cam to allow it to seat all the way down on the shaft as required to function properly. If it is not all the way down the microswitch does not fit all the way into the cam pockets . Took me at least an hour to get it properly installed on the valve shaft. The design of the cam need to be corrected to fit the shaft taper. The supplier did give wonderfully detailed instruction and drawing. Will buy from them again.

Easy to install on our Whirlpool WHES44 water softened after the OEM plastic gears broke causing faults with the system. This was easy to install, a total of about 5 screws after unclipping the top cover. Metal gears and cam teeth should ensure it lasts much longer and avoids future faults. Highly recommend.

Following someone else's review that mentioned this I tried it and it worked great. And metal parts rather than plastic. Now I can expect to not have to replace this item ever again. Super easy replacement. Remember to grease the gears.

My water softener (Intellisoft 370) started making horrible noises and I noticed the gear was not moving very much even during regen (about 1mm per minute?), and the movement was juddering. Replacement of this part was easily achieved using a simple screwdriver set, partially owing to the very clear step-by-step instructions for replacement of the parts. After a month, my water softener is still working well.
