Every time I use this compass it points different directions. I tried 2 of these units and both are defective.

For the price; it works fine. I tested it against a higher quality piece and it performed OK. The needle does not move freely; but is better than nothing.

Very inexpensive compass, I bought this as an emergency backup toss in my ATVs and backpacks. To be honest for what it is I like it but if you're shopping for a decent day to day compass I would suggest paying a couple of more dollars and getting something better

The orange Allen Company Compass works pretty good...I have to tilt it very slightly to the left to get the proper reading by the compass needle and this happens only if I am outside. But when I am inside my apartment it works perfectly WITHOUT the very little tilt to the left-it gives me a perfect reading, but who needs a compass inside their apartment. One thing I learned from this compass... is that if it isn't a very expensive compass you must learn the one you have-you must learn how it works and if it can work at all. When I am outside of my apartment I have learned, by tilting it very slightly to the left, it will give a proper reading. Whichever way you turn stay in position, tilt it very slightly to the left and wait for the reading. Where I live I know when I am standing towards the NORTH. And if I am standing towards the north when I have my compass in my hand... the compass needle will read NORTH if I tilt the compass very slightly to the left & then stand and wait a moment for the needle's reading. It works this was for any direction outside of my apartment. My brother taught me direction and this is how I know if the compass is working properly when I am standing facing north, south, east or west hemisphere wise. I also checked on line and was told...to face the sun & stretch out both my hands, sidewards, and whichever direction my right hand is pointing would be NORTH. And we know that south is opposite of north. And when facing the sun it is east and west if opposite of east. This compass is pretty ok, especially for the price-just learn how to use it. If you purchase this compass, you may not have to tilt it at all, to get the proper reading. But know and understand I do not think it is ok to use if you are going into the woods, forest, very large state parks or the jungle. Always get the best when it comes to protecting yourself (yourlife). Other than that it is good for your neighborhood, your county, the area where you live, and for the kids to learn direction. This compass is a lot smaller than I expected. As some other reviewers noted the needle doesn't move freely.Since the compass is small, the degree markings are also very small, and I have a hard time reading them without putting on my reading glasses. They also don't give you a precise indication of the heading since they are so small and close together. My kids opened the box before I got home and assumed it was for them, since it is so small and toy-like in appearance.Overall, if you are just trying to determine where north is, this will mostly do the job, but it seems a bit cheap even for the price. If you want a "real" compass, this is not the one to buy.

Amazon is either one of the shadyest bunch of con artists online or some of the most incompetently ignorant. After months of navigating thousands of poorly-worded, or, at times, virtually blank product descriptions, i finally settled on what very few items i could afford. i am utterly not shocked that the item is not as it is described in the product details. It (compass) claims to have a luminous dial, which most of the Allen compasses feature. What this odd-looking model (WHICH IS NOT THE SAME ITEM FEATURED IN THE PICTURE!!!!) really has is a high visibility dial. A miniscule dot of luminous paint on the body where the N is offers no navigation aid in any light condition, so i don't even know what good it is intended to do. It neither illuminates the dial so you can see any of the cardinal points, nor does it allow youto see which way the needle is pointing. It is completely useless! There is a very big difference. High visibility is a good feature, but it is not luminous, and not worth the $5 they charged me.i mean to report this fraud to the appropriate Better Business Bureau(s), and the pertaining Attorneys General to investigate. i likely wouldn't have been so irate if this were the first such oversight. But the ink refills for the Fisher Space Pens i ordered in February were also woefully (and perhaps intentionally??) inadequately described. When i suggested my attention to detail would be a great asset to Amazon, finding and correcting the numerous inaccuracies i find every day i search amazon, the customer service representative assured me they had such a department to rectify these flaws. They must not work very hard.If you can afford to piss your money away on amazon, please disregard this admonition. However, if, like me, your money is very precious to you and cannot be wasted on scams and snake oil, PLEASE read every part of the pages of every item you are considering buying. Read all the print, customer reviews, and similar products. Make sure you cross reference with competitors' sites, (i OFTEN find lower prices) and also peruse the site of the manufacturer of the merchandise you want. Make sure it meets your expectations. Five dollars may not be alot to you, but to me it's a few days worth of food and toilet paper.Amazon wants your money, not your satisfaction.

Inexpensive little compass with a nice sturdy lid, so we can throw it into a suitcase without fear of breakage. Easy to read, works great.

I carried this on a trip to London. I have an issue when I get out of the underground-which way do I turn on an overcast day or in the dark? I am perpetually turning around and going back the way I came. This time, I pulled this out of my pocket and checked directions. It was great.
