The brick is fine, nicely made and does what it's supposed to do in my forge. I rated 1 star only because of the packaging. I ordered 2 bricks and another small item and they put it in a box 21/2 times too big with only 5 or 6 big platic bubble. So I received 1 brick and 4/5... The rest is crumble and powder. I got those to cut in smaller brick so it's no big deal for me but I wanted to warn others.

These Fire Bricks are a boon to my small silver soldering operations. They are soft enough to accept short dress-maker pins pushed in with needle nose pliers, and hold the hold-downs (pins) for soldering. They're large enough to solder a large channel-work bin, or broach, or a small brass framework. They take all the heat required by my jewelers torch. I have several now , and am going to get more to make a Burn-out Oven. They're a great help to my hobbies. Thank You.

They work great but my only complaint was that 1 out of the 3 I purchased came broken. That wasn't a huge problem but as soon as I took it out of the plastic wrap it started to crumble away even more. Probably just got damaged during shipping but nonetheless they work great for helping distribute heat in my smoker!

i ordered 6 of these bricks for a foundry i built. they came intact (a little off the corners) and have worked great. i used a handsaw to cut them and only used 4 of the 6 for what i needed. with some satanite refractory morter they have survived several sessions each at least 4 hours of use. I'm pushing temps above 2200 degrees, and have even melted steel once (2700 degrees). I am satisfied with them and will eventually make a forge using more of these bricks.

These work quite well at insulating and are easy to cut with an old carpenter's saw. They are quite soft, softer than some other insulating fire bricks I got several years ago. That's not a criticism, just a comment. The low rating isn't because of the product, it would rate it a 5. I lowered the rating because of Amazon's packaging. The bricks were packed in a box with other items and air filled bags, but there was enough loose space that the bricks could move around and hit against each other in the box and the edges of all six bricks were beat up. It doesn't appear that the shipper was unduly rough on the box, although it appears that they retaped it in route because the original tape was just enough to hold the box flaps down, but not enough to give much structure to it.One would think that Amazon would take note of all the complaints about poor packaging.

Soft as hell but insulates very well. ordered three bricks to make a 2 brick forge and they arrived in a very large and well protected box! even so a few corners were chipped but it wasn't a problem for me.

What's to say? It's a brick. It does an excellent job at being a brick. It's a brick. Really though, it heats nicely, stays cool except for where direct fire is. It does crumble easily. Dust everywhere from it.

I just moved from a luxuriously large workspace to one where my elbows hit everything. My soldering station is much reduced, and I've had to become vividly aware of what's downwind of my torch. Back there, a few dozen centimeters of air space gave all the safety I needed. Now, something flammable is within a few dozen centimeters in every direction. Like a kid building a pillow fort, I pile these around my charcoal block and they work just fine.In fact, I was afraid to torch-solder in my small space because of fire hazard. I just completed a work-in-limbo with this as backstop against my torch, and got a nice result. The workpiece isn't done yet, but this brick enabled this step in its making. It's soft, it's crumbly, it makes a bit of a mess. But, if you and your fire need a nice, safe place to play, this can help. Very few might want this. But, if they do, they want THIS. I'm sure it's not the best price you'll ever find for this material. Still, if your needs are like mine and you want only one or two, you might end up as happy as I am with this. And, soft as it is, I can easily cut or shape it to specific purposes. If I start doing that very much (tonight, for example), fire brick could become one of the consumables in my little workspace - but not just yet.-- wiredweird

This is exactly what I expected to get. It is great for soldering metals on. It has held up very well, and is everything that I had wanted it to be. I ended up getting two of these so that I could use them together with one as an insulator for heat to solder some larger pieces. Worked perfectly! I would purchase these again in a second!

I am so glad that I took the time to look back over my orders for 2013 to see if I could find this. I have used both the soft magnesium bricks and charcoal bricks and this kind lasts the longest. I didn't have any issues with breaking apart during shipping. There was some grit in the bag but no biggie.
